In the fall, I most often use a fertilizer containing phosphorus and potassium, as these components will help the plant cope with cold and disease and improve the maturation of the wood. You can also add calcium in addition, but I do not advise using nitrogen-containing fertilizers, as a green mass may grow, which is completely useless before winter. But in the rainy season, I fertilize roses twice: the end of August (after flowering) and the beginning of October.
To apply top dressing, I use several methods:
- add root and foliar along with water;
- 10 cm from the stems, I make circular grooves, carefully, without damaging the root systems, and fill the hole with black soil and fertilizers;
- I put the granules in the soil or on top of it.
Foliar fertilization
I like this species for its convenience and practicality, since top dressing does not affect the composition of the soil, and the plant receives all the necessary elements in a matter of minutes.
What should you use? I recommend:
- superphosphate - 50 g per liter of boiling water, then dilute this solution in 10 liters of water and spray the leaves;
- 5 g of potassium monophosphate and the same amount of superphosphate per 10 liters of water.
Ash is also very useful for rose bushes. You can spray the leaves with a solution with the addition of ash, dissolving 200 g per 10 liters of water.
You need to do foliar feeding at the right time for this. Avoid the scorching sun so that there are no burns, and do not do it late at night, so as not to provoke the appearance of fungus due to high humidity.
Root fertilizer
In cold weather, I usually use high-quality complex fertilizers as top dressing. I prefer liquid solutions, but when time is short, I use long-acting formulations that dissolve slowly.
A proven and working fertilizer can be prepared with your own hands, using 16 g of the same potassium monophosphate and 15 g of superphosphate per 10 liters of water. The use of such a solution has also proven itself well: 10 g of potassium sulfate, 25 g of superphosphate and 2.5 g of boric acid per 10 liters of water. Only boric acid can cause burns if you overdo it.
Folk remedies
I use yeast as an alternative feeding. Dry yeast - 10 g, I insist 2 tablespoons of sugar in 10 liters of water for two hours. Then I add another 50 liters of water and water the roses. But, so that potassium is not removed from the soil due to yeast, you need to cover the ground with a thin layer of ash. Also, very often ash is used for fertilization as a separate element, watering the plants with a solution.
Sometimes I recommend spreading the manure on the ground where the roses grow. Slowly decomposing, it will give the plant many useful substances, which will be enough for the winter.
It is necessary to take care of rose bushes in a comprehensive manner: cut, destroy pests, huddle and cover before the onset of winter. And only then will your plants gratefully delight with their lush flowering.
