Now for the preparation of masonry mortar, various chemical mixtures are used, which really make it reliable and of sufficient quality. But they cost a lot. But in the old days all this was not, but the solution was surprisingly strong. Even after decades, it is difficult to knock him down not only with a sledgehammer, but also with a powerful puncher. What is the secret of such a strength of the mixture, to which nothing superfluous was added at all?

Important points not to be ignored

As it turned out, the secret lies in technology, which is often neglected in our time. In addition to technology, it is important to observe several other conditions:

  • the quality and proportions of the constituent components during mixing;
  • humidity.

Previously, builders, before proceeding with the laying, kept the building material (meaning brick) in a humid environment for a whole night. He had to be saturated with water. The bricks were stacked and wrapped in wet rags. In Soviet times, building materials were placed directly on pallets into vats filled with water. As a rule, nothing of the kind is being done now.

A brick saturated with moisture does not take it from the masonry mixture, which means that cement is not afraid of its deficiency. As a result, all the particles of the latter enter into the desired chemical reaction, which is a guarantee of a high-quality final product (in this case, cement mortar).

For the most part, brick laying was done in autumn or spring, only early, when the level of humidity is high enough. If they had to work in the heat of the summer, the builders at the end of each day after the completion of the work put wooden troughs filled with water on top of the masonry. The liquid penetrated into the brick and did not allow it to dry quickly.

Another important point is the plasticity of the masonry mixture. If it is plastic enough, then it is not only comfortable to work with it, but its adhesion to the surface of the building material is an order of magnitude higher. It is possible to achieve the required result in terms of plasticity only under one condition, if you use slaked and always fresh lime.

Lime is an excellent natural antiseptic, and thanks to dust particles, it also perfectly retains moisture. This component is not required much - about a fourth or fifth of the amount of cement.

In general, for the preparation of a high-quality masonry cement-lime mixture, you need to take: 1 part of cement, 0.2 parts of lime, 3.5 parts of sand and 0.9 water.

And one more important detail - it is necessary to use exclusively pure water for the preparation of the solution, and it does not matter where it will be taken from: from a well, a water supply system, a well, or this water is rainwater. In ancient times, craftsmen even defended water from a well for a day, and only then used it. If all these points are taken into account and implemented in practice, then the solution will turn out to be surprisingly strong, and the brickwork will be reliable and durable.

It will be no less interesting and useful to learn one more
a way to make cement mortar and concrete 2-3 times stronger.
