Most often, summer residents plant raspberries in the spring, but the autumn planting has a significant advantage, since planting sprouts in September-October will help the raspberry to survive and get high harvests. I am ready to share with you my secrets on how I create suitable conditions for culture.
The optimal timing of planting seedlings in the fall
The timing depends on some factors: weather conditions, raspberry varieties, growing region.
I plant the plants about two to three weeks before the frost appears.
The main criterion for determining the readiness of seedlings is the formation of replacement buds on the crown.
Plant the raspberries on time, do not postpone planting, otherwise the plant will not have time to take root and may die in winter.
How to properly prepare the site for planting
A sunny corner in the garden, well protected from drafts, is well suited for the berry.
It is advisable to prepare the place in advance. If possible, siderates should be sown before planting raspberries. If you decide to plant a plant unexpectedly, choose a site where perennials grew before.
You cannot plant raspberries in beds where strawberries and nightshades were predecessors.
The culture grows well on loamy and sandy loam soil. It is possible to lower the acidity in the soil by liming. To do this, add dolomite, slaked lime, ground limestone to the ground. With the help of lime, the structure of the soil is improved and phosphorus and nitrogen accumulate in the soil.
The right choice of seedlings
Choose only healthy seedlings for planting. A quality plant is a shoot at least 20 cm long and about 5 mm in diameter with well-developed roots.
Place the purchased seedlings in the liquid for two days, and cut off the dried stems before planting. Before placing the bush in the ground, dip the roots in the prepared mullein composition (1:10).
Bush planting method
It is considered one of the popular methods of planting raspberries. Good for multiple drop off locations.
Before planting the plants, I mark it with a string, placing the plants at a distance of 0.7-0.9 m, making rows with an interval of 1.5-2 m between them.
After marking the site, I dig holes (30x30x30 cm). I pour compost or humus (3-5 kg) into each hole, add superphosphate (30-35 g) and potassium salt (20-25 g).
I mix the fertilizers in the hole with the soil, form the holes and place the seedling, straightening the roots. Be sure to make sure that the kidney is 2-3 cm below the ground surface.
I water the bush after planting.
Tape method
It is necessary to pull the string with an interval between rows of 2.0-2.5 m.Then a ditch is dug up to a depth and width of 40 cm.
The amount of fertilizer is exactly the same as with the bush planting method. Fertilizers must be mixed with the soil. The prepared shoots are placed in a trench with an interval between seedlings of 30-70 cm. Then the earth is tamped so that there is no void between the roots, the planted seedlings are watered.
I always install a trellis along the trench and tie them up as young bushes grow.
Care of young plants
At the end of planting, I cut off the bushes and leave a height of 20-25 cm. This procedure improves the survival rate and helps to form new shoots in the spring.
I advise you to mulch the soil around the plantings. In this case, you can use hay, humus, sawdust. Make the layer no more than 5 cm thick. As soon as the soil thaws in the spring, remove the mulch. Further care consists in watering, feeding, pruning and preventive treatments against diseases and harmful insects.
