Some varieties of these crops may not be covered for the winter, especially if severe frosts are not expected. For different varieties of this plant, there are different ways to hide roses for the winter, so I will tell you about the most popular ones.
Do roses need shelter for the winter
Before purchasing roses, you need to consult with experts on this issue. First of all, you need to pay attention to the winter hardiness of the variety and optimal weather conditions. Least of all, the survival rate of the bushes is affected by their age, the method of shelter and the general development of culture.
Top dressing and processing of roses before shelter
During this period, plants should be fed with special formulations for autumn:
- Roses require calcium, potassium and phosphorus. To do this, add potassium monophosphate (16 g) and superphosphate (15 g) to a bucket of water, or dilute potassium sulfate (10 g), boric acid (2.5 g) and superphosphate (25 g). Introduce no more than 5 liters of solution under the plant.
- As a folk method, use banana peel or ash powder (bank 3 l / sq. m of land).
- You can use the complex fertilizer "Autumn" for feeding roses.
During processing, spraying with fungicides is applied in front of the shelter:
- a solution made from copper sulfate (3%);
- solutions of the following drugs "Baktofit", "Topaz".
Shelter of climbing roses
The procedure must be carried out carefully and carefully so as not to accidentally damage the stems of the shrubs. First, do a little rose maintenance:
- gently pinch the branches;
- get rid of foliage and petioles, remove the stems from the trellis;
- sprinkle the resulting injuries and wounds on the bushes with wood ash.
For climbing roses, you can apply two types of shelter:
- Method one: sprinkle the base of the plant, cover with spruce needles, pour sand and cover with spruce branches. The stems are laid on spruce branches. Cover with spruce branches and at the end wrap up the green mass with any covering material.
- Method two carried out in good weather. First, the branches are tied with twine, the more powerful stems are bent to the surface of the earth, laying on a wire frame. A wooden shelter is erected on top, then the entire building is covered with a film. While the temperature is up to -3 ° C, the walls of the structure cannot be covered tightly, let the plants be hardened. In case of persistent frost, close the canopy completely on all sides.
Shelter for bush plants
These roses are not afraid of the first frost. Necessary measures before the shelter:
- unripe stems should be cut and foliage removed;
- it is necessary to prune shrubs and treat parasites with Inta-Vir, and for fungal diseases - with special means.
Three ways to hide bush roses:
- hut – the usual construction, consisting of a pair of boards or small boards covered with foil;
- the option for the warm winter period is to huddle the base of the shrub with soil, dry foliage can be laid on top;
- the air-dry method is carried out by laying the stems on the surface of the ground and securing them with metal brackets. Then dry leaves are poured. Small supports are installed around, on top of which they are covered with mats and covered with a film cover. Stones are laid along the edges of the film.
Shelter of the standard rose
First of all, sanitary pruning is performed, during which damaged branches are removed.
Young stems are carefully bent to the ground and hooked to the shoot with a metal bracket. The lower part of the shrub is sprinkled with sand or foliage. The plant is covered with spruce branches and covered with a waterproofing material.
Age cultures don't bend. They just arrange a wire frame around the plant. Inside, they are covered with dry leaves or sawdust. Cover the top with a plastic bag, fix the edges with twine.
Shelter rose floribunda
This rose needs autumn pruning and shelter for the winter. Trimming is done in such a way that shoots of at least 25-30 cm remain above the surface. The cut trunks are sprinkled with soil or peat.
Shelter of plant cuttings
Cuttings can be stored in several ways:
- The fabric is laid in the dug holes, the cuttings are folded separately from each other, covered with material and covered with soil.
- Sphagnum is processed with the help of "Fitosporin", cuttings are twisted with it, placed in polyethylene and stored in a refrigerator or cellar.
- Cuttings keep well on the balcony. For this, expanded clay is poured into a bucket, then earth for roses and perlite. Moisten the substrate. Cuttings are cut in slices, first dipped into liquid, then into a growth stimulator. And only after this procedure, cuttings are placed in a small hole in the substrate. Covered with cellophane and a blanket, the bucket is exposed in a warm place. In case of warm weather, the shelter is removed for a short time, and in severe frosts, it is recommended to bring them into the room.
