The GAZ-3111 "Volga" car was to become the most massive domestic car since the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the 3111th "Volga" had an extremely difficult and ambiguous fate. In the end, everything turned out so that today the majority of compatriots do not even know or remember about one of the most ambitious domestic car projects. So what was this car like?

The development of the GAZ-3111 "Volga" began after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1996. At that time, the GAZ enterprise was looking for new ways to gain a foothold in the domestic car market, which was unexpectedly flooded with numerous foreign cars. The car was developed for two years, after which it was presented at the Moscow Car Salon in 1998. They made a novelty with an eye not only on the domestic, but also on the European market. The Volga was even able to successfully pass all EuroNCAP safety tests.

The car turned out to be very beautiful and very progressive in terms of design, despite the fact that in fact it was a deep modernization of the old Soviet passenger car GAZ-24. Designers and domestic dealers hoped for commercial success. However, this is where the problems began: the car turned out to be too complex in terms of production. Especially in the difficult 1990s.

The car was even shown in the USA. It was proposed that the GAZ-3111 car could replace the model that appeared in the 1980s, the GAZ-3110. Moreover, the car has collected a lot of positive reviews. Foreigners massively noted the similarity of this model with the GAZ-21. The interior design and the pleasant body contours were highly appreciated. However, despite all this, it never came to mass production.

To be fair, it should be noted that not all decisions in 3111 were exceptionally successful. Affected by the fact that this car was still not an original project, but the fruit of a deep modernization. That is why it contained the ZMZ-405 engine, which was frankly outdated at the time of the 1990s, with a return of 155 hp. The installation worked together with a 5-speed gearbox. Ultimately, GAZ produced only 420 of these cars; they were assembled almost by hand. The project lasted until 2009, until it was finally curtailed after the next wave of the economic crisis.
