Why are LED (light-emitting diode) lamps harmful? Properties that most have never heard of

  • Nov 06, 2021

How often do you see LED bulbs? I think every day. LEDs are very popular today. And although such lamps are installed almost everywhere, people are not fully convinced of their absolute safety. It turns out that LEDs are harmful to human vision. If you doubt it, be sure to read the article to the end!

Why are LED (light-emitting diode) lamps harmful? Properties that most have never heard of

Benefits of LED bulbs

Before moving on to describing the dangerous properties of LED lamps, you need to talk about their advantages.

  • 1. The biggest advantage is that LEDs are very economical. If we compare an LED lamp and a conventional incandescent lamp, then the former will be ten times more effective. And since electricity prices are constantly growing in our country, residents are trying to save money and use LEDs.
  • 2. If you listen to the manufacturers of LED lamps, they assure that their products work up to 30 thousand hours. While the operating life of an incandescent lamp is no more than 1 thousand hours.
  • 3. The design of LEDs is safer than that of incandescent lamps. Most LED lamps are equipped with a plastic diffuser. It is clear that it is much easier to harm a glass shard than a plastic shard. Therefore, LED lamps win here too.

We talked about the good, now let's talk about the bad

I did not find more advantages of LEDs, so let's move on to their disadvantages.

  • The first and most "fat" minus LED lamps are due to their negative effects on the eyes.

Not all LED manufacturers are bona fide. Many do not follow the lamp manufacturing technology, use outdated methods. Therefore, LEDs spoil human vision.

  • Sometimes LED bulbs have too high ripple. This is again due to the dishonesty of manufacturers who use bad parts.
  • In pursuit of profit, manufacturers save on everything. Therefore, consumers buy LED lamps with a defective frequency converter. Some have a bridge rectifier with a ripple of 100 Hz.
For the human eye, this frequency is unrealistic. Therefore, vision begins to fall, and the general psychophysical state is also disturbed.

I advise you to approach the choice of LEDs wisely, weigh all the nuances, pros and cons.

Safety LED Selection Guidelines

And although LEDs have a very bad effect on a person, you can significantly reduce the negative consequences. If you follow these tips, you will suffer less from exposure to LED lamps:

  • 1. Look at the color temperature when purchasing. It is better to take lamps with natural warm light, which is in the range of 2600 - 3400 K. This parameter is directly related to the radiation intensity of LED - lamps in the blue spectrum.

If you spend a long time in a room with LEDs with an increased percentage of blue light, you will soon begin to notice deterioration in vision.

This problem is especially relevant for children, their retina is very sensitive. I do not recommend installing LEDs in children's rooms, as well as where kids often play. In this case, it is better to choose halogen or ordinary incandescent lamps.

For the same reason, I do not recommend using LEDs with a light transmission above 3400 K in bedrooms. After prolonged eye exposure to LED lamps, it is much more difficult for a person to fall asleep.

  • 2. The flickering frequency of the LEDs should not be between 7 and 350 Hz. In this case, the human nervous system will stagger. There are norms that state that the pulsation coefficient of lamps should not be more than 12% - (this is for residential premises). This indicator can be found in expensive and high-quality LEDs.

So it turns out that finding a good LED lamp is not so easy. It is better to purchase them in electric stores from trusted sellers.
