Outdated storage systems: the designer told which cabinets are no longer relevant and how to replace them

  • Nov 08, 2021

Organizing storage systems is an important part of interior planning. In order not to have to lay out things in the corners of the apartment, it is better to equip a separate dressing room. If there is no free space in the apartment, they resort to using cabinets. To prevent storage systems from becoming a heavy load, you need to choose an up-to-date design.

Which cabinet models are already outdated, the designer said Natalia Balashova (artELLE - design).

Bright facades

Cabinets with bright facades or active color inserts may be appropriate only in kitsch or pop art interiors. Colorful doors greatly overload the space and draw too much attention to themselves.

It is worth sticking to a more neutral color scheme. This does not mean that cabinet fronts must necessarily be white or light gray.

If you want to make an accent, it is better to choose muted complex shades, which include gray. And monochromatic facades in the color of the walls will allow the overall wardrobe to "dissolve" in space.

Bright storage systems can be used only in children's rooms. However, they need to be used in dosage and taking into account the range of the rest of the interior, so that the room does not turn out to be too clumsy and variegated. In this case, it is better to avoid glossy facades.

Excessive decor

In the days of "European-style renovations", sliding wardrobes with drawings on mirrors or stickers on laminated facades were popular. Today, such excesses are unpopular, they greatly simplify and reduce the cost of the interior.

This applies not only to hallways, living rooms and bedrooms, but also to children's rooms. It is better to experiment with the relief - to make the facades corrugated or louvered. There are also facades with interesting milling shapes.

Sliding wardrobe with wide rails

Everyone is familiar with the wardrobe models with wide rails and doors in a metal profile frame. This design looks outdated today.

An alternative can be cabinets built into a niche in the ceiling, the guides of which will be practically invisible. If you are planning a free-standing cabinet, it is better to stop at swing doors - they do not have a frame, and due to this, the cabinet will look more concise. In addition, such a wardrobe is cheaper due to the lack of mechanical structures.

Classic design

Cabinets with carved gilded doors will be difficult to integrate even into a classic interior. Modern classics practice a departure from pomp and excesses, therefore, wishing to increase the price of the interior, you can achieve the opposite effect.

If you want to add a "zest", you can supplement the facades with moldings or panels, put a metal edging along the bottom, or, for example, use unusual handles.

2. Photo printing

Another stop-trick is photo printing on the doors. Realistic photos of cities, flowers or fruits are unlikely to make the interior more sophisticated. Such prints look unwarranted. And if you try to support them with similar photo wallpaper or other decor, it's easy to overload the space.

Corner cupboard

The corner cabinet model with a diagonal door also looks outdated today. In an attempt to save space, you can disrupt the geometry of the space, making such a wardrobe look even more cumbersome. A corner wardrobe may be suitable for an isolated dressing room, but in this case it is better not to cover the sections with facades.
