When buying a land plot, many summer residents are so inspired by plans for the future that sometimes they simply do not notice "little things" like unevenness or slope of the surface. After a while, we have to face "surprises" and fix the problem with leveling the site. I will tell you how and at what time it is best to do it.
Why is it necessary to level the site
Leveling the surface is necessary in such cases:
- when the territory is located in a swampy area or in a river floodplain;
- if a significant bias to one side is strongly noticeable;
- if there are many old trees or stumps on the site that need to be uprooted;
- in the presence of hillocks, bumps, embankments;
- for arranging a flower bed, orchard or garden plot;
- when preparing the soil for construction.
The planning of the territory for the lawn and garden should be carried out properly so that there is no stagnation of water and waterlogging.
A classic lawn must be arranged on a perfectly flat surface. Otherwise, in a vast area with grass, every bump and hole will be noticeable, which will ruin the landscape. In this regard, the leveling of the ground for the lawn should be carried out in two stages: the first rough one in the autumn and the final one with the onset of spring.
The right time to level the area
Basically, such work is carried out in the autumn. Summer residents are trying to finish the alignment before November, before the rains and frosts begin.
- I advise you to level the surface for a garden plot from September to October - with the expectation of planting fruit crops and bushes in the spring.
- It is better to prepare the soil for garden planting from the autumn period - to level it, feed and treat with drugs against parasites.
- Plots for placing high ridges need to be prepared in the fall.
Clearing and leveling of the construction area can be carried out in any period, except for winter, and always in warm and dry weather.
Leveling the territory yourself
The site can be leveled using a manual or mechanized method, depending on its size and the complexity of the relief.
On a plot of 6-8 acres, all work can be done independently by following a series of actions.
Site cleaning
First of all, the territory must be cleared of debris, cut down and, if necessary, uprooted excess trees and shrubs, and mowed weeds. The following tools are used to carry out the work: a trimmer, a chainsaw and an ax.
Old unnecessary buildings must be dismantled and burned.
Removing the top layers
The top layer must be removed and folded over the edges of the area.
The virgin area is treated with a cultivator capable of removing dense sod. On such a unit, special cutters should be installed that will help cut off the upper layers of the soil.
Carrying out markings and zoning
Then they begin to mark the site, highlighting the necessary zones.
It is necessary to drive the pegs into the ground at a distance of up to one and a half meters from each other and stretch the rope between them in such a way that squares with sides of one or one and a half meters are formed.
Alignment
The appropriate height is measured: the embankment above the tied cord is removed and soil is added to the pits.
As soon as the surface is leveled, the markings should be removed, the area should be leveled with a rake, choosing weeds and roots from plants. The soil can then be compacted with a hand roller.
The prepared surface is watered with liquid and left alone for 10-14 days. During this period, the soil will be compacted, and it will be possible to continue working with it.
If there are large differences in height and relief on the site, then you need to buy the necessary volume of soil in order to equalize the height of the level to the intended line. If there is a layer of clay under the topsoil, it is recommended to remove it and replace it with sand backfill.
