Everyone can grow tomatoes at home. Which varieties are best suited for this, and which definitely are not - my experience

  • Nov 08, 2021

Almost everyone is engaged in growing tomatoes in their summer cottage, but what to do in winter, when there is snow outside the window? When I first began to study the question of growing this crop at home, I discovered that there are many hybrids and varieties that can grow on a windowsill. In the first winter, I purchased four types of seeds. All the bags were marked with an indication that it was a low-growing variety. For better growth, I did not buy fashionable phytolamps, I decided that tomatoes can grow under ordinary LED lamps, which should work for about 15 hours a day.

How to plant tomatoes that will grow at home

I decided to mix the soil myself. I got it very light, nutritious and moisture-consuming. To prepare it, I took 4 parts of universal peat soil, 3 parts of coconut substrate, 2 parts of vermiculite and a part of vermiculite. I poured the prepared soil into two-liter flower pots. Then I planted it in the same way as any tomatoes are planted.

The first fertilizing with fertilizer for tomatoes was done after the flower brushes appeared. Of course, there are many little things that you need to pay attention to when growing this crop, but this article is not about that. I want to tell you about the varieties that ended up in my home. After all, we all know that what the manufacturer wrote on the seed packaging does not always grow in practice.

1. Bonsai micro F1

Tomato baby. Perhaps the most compact and early maturing hybrid. The bush grew to a height of about 15 centimeters, while it turned out to be very spreading, but squat. If you want to see an ornamental and aesthetic plant, then this is the opposite option. Another disadvantage is the tiny and absolutely tasteless fruits. The leaves on the plant quickly turned yellow, and then completely flew around. Conclusion: I will not plant this variety myself and I do not advise you.

2. Grigorashik F1

In our family, he received the nickname "tomato bonsai". A very beautiful hybrid with a height of 30 centimeters. Distantly resembles a tree - a strong trunk with a good crown. The first fruits do not ripen quickly. Approximately 2.5-3 months after germination, but it is worth waiting for them. The tomatoes will be large and tasty.

3. Minibel F1

In this case, you should not count on the fact that your miniature will grow. The bush turned out to be high - about a meter, I had to make a support and tie it up. Take a closer look at this variety if you are growing a tomato for the sake of fruit - Minibel is very harvestable. The fruits are not large, but they taste like real cherry. I ripened 80 days after germination.

4. Cerrinano F1

This variety greatly upset me. The manufacturer indicated on the package that the bushes will be 30 centimeters high, as a result of which I have grown huge plants from four seeds, the place for which is either in the greenhouse or in the open field.

5. Silver spruce

I like to plant this variety in the garden beds, but I decided to try to grow it at home. I hung the lighting on top of the plant, which is probably why instead of a "Christmas tree" I got a bush in the shape of a pine tree. The fruits were also sweet and fragrant, although in the country they grow much larger. The bush is spreading, I had to tie it up and put several supports. I got the first harvest in 2.5 months.

I transferred the bushes that grew in winter to the balcony in the summer, and sent large specimens to the dacha.

Growing tomatoes in winter is fun. Try it, and you will also definitely like watching how small, but real tomatoes grow.
