Greetings, dear subscribers and guests of the channel!
If you have a summer cottage, there is probably a large barrel of water on it. It comes in handy when watering plants. Also, a supply of water is often needed for household and needs.
When it gets colder outside, summer residents gradually prepare plots for winter. Some difficulties arise when preparing barrels of water for frost.
It is not difficult to guess that when the thermometers drop much below zero, the water freezes, and a large block of ice forms in the barrel. Often, this simply tears the barrel apart. Of course, you can simply drain the water, but some are too lazy to do it. Others want to conserve water so that when spring comes they will have a supply.
What to do in this case? How to prevent a barrel from bursting? I will share with you some simple but effective methods.
If the described problem is relevant for you, then be sure to use my advice. And the water will not need to be drained, and the barrel will remain intact!
1. Plastic bottles
Let's talk, why does the barrel burst? The fact is that the ice block strongly presses on the walls and bottom of the container. The barrel does not withstand this pressure, the walls crack, the bottom flies out. You can avoid this. It is necessary to make sure that the center of pressure is in a different place.
To do this, you can take a plastic bottle and tie a weight to it from below. It is necessary to ensure that the top of the bottle sticks out above the surface, and its bottom is submerged in water.
The bottom of the barrel should be covered with an even layer of sand. You can also make the bottom out of plastic bottles pre-filled with water so that they don't float. All this will help to shift the center of gravity.
When the water turns into ice, it will exert pressure not on the bottom and walls of the barrel, but on the sand poured on the bottom and on the bottles that we placed inside the barrel.
By the way, an important point is the region in which you live. For residents of the central and southern regions, the described method will be relevant.
2. We arm ourselves with a stick
There is an even easier way. It is necessary to place a log or a bar in a barrel (an old shovel, rake, a hoe, etc. will do)
The bar should be at an angle in the barrel and peep out of the water by at least 20 centimeters.
When the water begins to freeze, the ice will gradually creep up the bar. Thus, the walls and bottom of the barrel will not experience much pressure and remain intact.
