Fattening tomatoes

The fattening of tomatoes means that the bushes are actively increasing the green mass, but fruiting at the same time suffers. In this case, the plant looks strong and healthy, but flowering and fruit set stops. This problem is most often observed precisely with the greenhouse growing method. If you are faced with fattening tomatoes, you should know that this is not a manifestation of some kind of disease and not a genetic problem. The reason is always in violation of agricultural technology.

If tomatoes are fattening, you risk getting a meager crop or not seeing it at all.

How to recognize the problem

If you keep a close eye on your plants, you can spot the problem in time and take action. In order to prevent fattening, it is important to pay attention and exclude the following points:

  • The stems of the bushes are powerful and strong, the leaves are large and have a beautiful emerald hue. However, the upper leaves are curled up.
  • From the flower tassels, leaves and stepsons appear. This process is called fouling.
  • The brushes are formed with a large number of buds, which soon crumble.

What are the reasons for fattening tomatoes and how to fix them

So, as I said, the reasons for fattening are always closely related to agricultural technology. Therefore, do not allow the following things in your greenhouse:

  • Thickening of plantings. Tomato bushes located too close to each other will suffer from a lack of light, which is necessary for the correct course of photosynthesis. To compensate for this deficit, tomatoes are throwing all their strength into growing green mass. To fix the problem, thin out your plantings by removing some of the foliage that is blocking the normal flow of light.
  • Violation of the temperature regime. For healthy growth and ripening, tomatoes need to maintain a daily temperature of 22 to 24 degrees. At night, the thermometer should not drop below 16 degrees, otherwise the process of pollen formation will stop. Too high a temperature will lead to the fact that the flowers and ovaries simply crumble. To prevent overheating, systematically ventilate the area.
  • Excess dressing. A lot does not mean good. An excessive amount of fertilizers, as well as their lack, leads to negative consequences. This is especially true of nitrogen, because it is thanks to it that the green mass grows. To prevent such a situation, do not fertilize the soil with fresh organic matter, but use it to prepare working solutions.
  • High humidity, which tomatoes strongly dislike. In combination with abundant watering, this factor will lead to the growth of green mass without fruiting. Do not water too often. During the period of active growth, one watering per week is enough for the culture.
  • Lack of light. Tomatoes are very light-loving crops, therefore it is very important to maintain good lighting.

How to avoid fattening: tips

Any problem is easier to prevent than to fight. Therefore, I advise you to follow preventive measures:

  • Don't thicken your plantings. For low-growing varieties, a minimum interval of 30 centimeters should be observed between the bushes, for tall species this interval increases to 40 centimeters. In addition, when choosing a planting scheme, be guided by the recommendations for each specific variety.
  • Do not place the greenhouse in the shade, as the tomatoes will lack the necessary light.
  • Do not neglect the formation of bushes. Timely removed excess shoots will save the bushes from thickening.
  • Feed your pets in a timely manner with potash and phosphorus compounds and always monitor the external condition of the plant.

Now you know what fattening is and how to protect your plantings from it. Good luck to everyone and a rich harvest!
