  • Nov 18, 2021

Raspberries are considered one of the most unpretentious in growing plants, so even the most inexperienced gardeners take on its cultivation. However, this berry bush also needs some care. Over time, the raspberry tree degenerates, the berries become smaller, and the question arises about the rejuvenation of the raspberry plantation. Traditionally, berry seedlings are planted in the spring or autumn. However, some experienced gardeners prefer to plant young bushes in the summer. And this solution has its advantages. Today I will tell you about some of the secrets of the summer transplantation of this berry bush.

Advantages and disadvantages

If you plant new seedlings in the fall, then next year you can expect the first harvest of berries. Spring or summer planting will not please with such a result, but the likelihood of successful survival of the bushes is much higher. The earth is warmed up, so even sharp cold snaps in the summer months will not harm the fragile bushes. Saplings take root quickly and later get sick less often. The only negative is that I recommend purchasing only seedlings with a closed root system, since plants with open roots do not take root well in summer soil, get sick and most often dry out.

Choosing the best time frame

The period from early June to late July is considered the most favorable for this procedure. It is best to start planting in the early morning, when the sun is just beginning to rise. It is best to choose cloudy weather, but no wind or rain. The increased humidity of the air and soil on such days contributes to a faster adaptation of raspberry bushes.

Planting methods

You can plant a berry bush in summer with ready-made seedlings or cuttings. Some gardeners propagate the berry by seed. Cuttings for planting are stored in advance from the roots of raspberries. To do this, the dug out rhizome is divided into pieces of 15-17 cm, then placed in a container with raw sand in the cold. In the summer, cuttings are dropped to a depth of 10-15 cm. Reproduction of raspberries by ready-made seedlings is considered the most popular.

Choosing planting material

If you buy young raspberries from a nursery or store, carefully examine the bushes. Give preference to healthy plants with no signs of disease or damage to the rhizome. The best age for planting a seedling is 1 or 2 years. In this case, the stem of the plant is strong and thickened, 0.8-1 cm in diameter, with pale green buds. The rhizomes must be constantly moistened, but not allowed to rot or dry out. Is the planting material ready? Then we decide on the place.

Place for raspberry

Raspberries love light and warm places in the back of the garden, away from drafts. Some gardeners place raspberries along fences, next to an apple or pear tree, but away from cherries or blackberries. So you can protect the delicate stems from the harsh wind. Choose a flat area without holes or hills. The plantation should be of such a size that at least 1 m remains between plantings, and between in separate rows 2-2.5 m.Prepare the ground for raspberries in advance so that the soil has time to give the necessary shrinkage. In about 2 months, apply fertilizers to the soil: humus, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers and dig up the ground. At the bottom of a pit 40-50 cm deep and 40-60 cm wide, we first lay a drainage layer.

Landing

Bushes can be planted in a bush method, when a separate hole is made for each seedling, or trench. Trenches are made 40 cm deep and 50 cm wide. Before planting, I soak the rhizomes in mullein solution. After that, we plant it in a prepared place, carefully spreading the roots and sprinkle it with fertile soil. We water and mulch the plantings abundantly.

Raspberry bushes planted in summer will take root safely before the onset of cold weather, and next year they will certainly please with the first harvest.
