When you look at the Bulat SUV and learn its history, it becomes clear that the Russian land has not yet become scarce in talents. Looks "Bulat" quite modern, while outwardly resembling the configuration of the famous American SUV. At the same time, not everyone knows that the basis of the Russian car is a rather old Soviet truck.
The history of this SUV began in 2003. Then a group of designers from Russia decided to create an all-terrain vehicle on the basis of the old Soviet GAZ-66 truck. The specialists of the "Retro-Style" company worked on the project. The result of their work was the Barkhan off-road vehicle on the Shishigi nodes, which was assembled and presented at the Moscow Motor Show in a single copy. Although the car did not shine with external data, it was able to find its buyer.
A few years after the first success, the designers of "Retro-Style" took up a new automobile project, which was carried out on the basis of the existing developments. Another SUV based on the GAZ-66 was named "Bulat" in honor of the son of a customer from Kyrgyzstan, who became the main sponsor of the development. The main condition for the development was the use of components and spare parts from local manufacturers in order to reduce the cost of "Bulat" and increase its maintainability. True, it was still not possible to fully comply with this condition.
The design of the car has become more aggressive. The frame, razdatka and bridges of the "Bulat" were left from the Soviet "Shishiga". As a result, the ground clearance was 315 mm. A turbo-diesel unit with 115 horsepower was installed under the hood of the car. The SUV has disc brakes on all wheels. There is also a modification without a turbine. But the gearbox had to be imported. We borrowed it from German cars of the Mercedes-Benz brand.

As a result, "Bulat" has very good off-road qualities. From the very beginning, the car was designed not only for consumption in the domestic market, but also for export. True, it never came to mass production. "Bulat" is produced to this day in small batches and only on order.
