But in order for the harvest of Peking cabbage to please you, you need to know many secrets of its cultivation. Today we will talk about this with you.
It turns out that you can grow Chinese cabbage in different ways: at home in pots or in the country in the open field. Let's consider each of the options in more detail.
If you planted cabbage in open ground
When you are planting cabbage outdoors, you need to consider the variety of the same cabbage that you intend to plant. Like any vegetable, cabbage is subdivided into early, mid-season and late varieties. The time of planting the cabbage will also depend on this. You also need to know that this particular vegetable can be grown in both seedling and non-seedling methods.
Usually the rule for planting Peking cabbage is this: in regions with a warm climate, you can plant seeds directly in open ground, and seedlings are planted in northern regions with a colder climate.
If you are going to plant with seeds, then it is better to use separate containers, since then it will be more convenient to plant in a separate soil.
Tip: remember that the seedlings that you immediately plant in open ground are more resistant to temperature extremes and various pests.
Be careful when choosing an outdoor planting site. Early and mid-season varieties are best planted in darkened places, later ones can also be planted in direct sunlight.
Another important fact is that which previously grew in the soil where you are going to plant the cabbage. Good precursors for Chinese cabbage will be: legumes, chicory, potatoes, plants from the onion family, tomatoes, celery and melons.
Do not try to plant Chinese cabbage in places where representatives of the Cabbage family grew. They have common diseases.
Peking cabbage ripens quickly, so it can be planted several times per season.
Important: try to plant Chinese cabbage when the ground has already warmed up, it does not tolerate low temperatures.
This vegetable has several growing seasons, and they all depend on the variety you choose.
- Ripening in early maturing varieties is about 35 days.
- Mid-season ripens for about 60 days.
- Late varieties withstand up to 70 days.
The type of variety also affects the storage duration. So, for example, representatives of the first two varieties should be eaten immediately, late-ripening ones are stored for up to six months.
How to care for
The basic rules of care that will bring a good harvest include correct and timely watering, as well as the introduction of mineral dressings.
Watering is carried out in warm dry weather once every 3 days. Be sure to use warm water for this purpose.
Remember: be sure to water the plant at the root. Otherwise, you can ruin the plant.
Correct feeding
The first feeding of the plant can already be carried out two weeks after planting. In this case, organic fertilizers are perfect: bird droppings, mullein or nitroammophoska.
For subsequent dressings, you can make two more, it is better to use wood ash or boric acid solution.
Subsequent dressings are also best done with an interval of up to two weeks between dressings.
We grow cabbage at home on the windowsill
For this purpose, it is better to sow the seeds immediately in separate containers, where it can grow. Then it is not recommended to transplant it, since it is very vulnerable and does not tolerate picks.
Early varieties will be a good option for planting on window sills: Lenok, Polukochanaya, Ibinskaya and many others.
Their ripening periods vary from 30 to 60 days. They have good survival and stress resistance.
