In recent years, winters did not spoil us, summer residents, with a lot of snow. And strong winds and a site that is located on a slope, like mine, do not contribute to the retention of snow cover in the garden. My ingenuity helps me solve this problem. Today I will tell you what methods I use in my country house to provide my plantings with a thick blanket of snow.
Building barriers
This method of trapping snow masses can be temporary and permanent. It is quite simple and consists in erecting wind barriers.
As such barriers, I use boards made of plywood or boards (1x2 m). I dig them into the ground in a checkerboard pattern.
After a lot of snow has collected on the site, the shields can be moved to another place.
It is possible to build barriers to trap snow masses on the site not only from boards and plywood. For this purpose, branches will also work. It is important that the branches are healthy, free from diseases and pests.
You can also use wicker vine decorative fences as a barrier to snow.
I bend the branches and shovel the snow
To keep the snow in my area, I bend the branches of some bushes to the ground. I do this manipulation with those shrubs that have flexible lashes (for example, gooseberry and raspberry bushes).
This method of shoveling wet snow is especially good after heavy snowfall. It allows me to form dense heaps. In this case, it is imperative to take into account the direction of the wind.
I tamp and huddle
You can tamp the snow just by walking around the site. With this simple manipulation, you will ensure that the period of snow melting will last.
For better preservation, I sprinkle the snow mass with straw or sawdust. And the attacking snow can also spud tree trunks.
Correctly planned your site
If you just bought a personal plot, then, in order not to think every year how to keep snow on it, immediately correctly plan its territory.:
- decide where it is better to plant trees with shrubs;
- think about where to put the fence.
I advise you to consider other nuances:
- Where snow constantly accumulates and next to various obstacles and hedges, plant strawberry bushes, raspberries, mountain ash, perennials.
- Where snow masses do not linger, are blown away by the wind, plant something like sea buckthorn, honeysuckle, and standard trees.
- There are crops that can easily endure even severe frosts and winds. It is better to plant them in the most blown places of the land plot (for example, next to farm buildings and a house). These trees include cherry and plum.
Visit your dacha during the entire winter period in order to throw a snowball in time where it is most needed. Elsewhere, you may need to clear the snow drift.
Use my proven and approved methods of trapping snow on the site. They have never let me down. Do as I do, and in the spring you will definitely be guaranteed a good harvest!
