Winter garlic sprouts can withstand short-term frosts down to -15 ° C. As soon as spring comes and the snow cover disappears, the vegetable activates, and at above-zero temperatures the first shoots will hatch from the soil. And for the development of fruits, a lower temperature is required. In dry warm weather, the heads are smallish. Let's talk about the causes of poor sprouting of winter garlic and how to prevent this.
Why did winter garlic not sprout?
When the soil warms up to +7 ° C in spring, the vegetable begins to grow. If after the establishment of above-zero temperatures and the disappearance of the snow, garlic shoots did not appear, it is worth considering why winter garlic does not hatch.
The seeds are frozen
Several circumstances when planting material freezes:
- Unfavorable weather conditions: severe frosts, a small layer of snow.
- Wrong embarkation depth selected.
- There was no mulch in the beds.
- The selected garlic variety is not suitable for the climate of the planting region.
The garlic cloves are rotten
The soil should be loose and fertile, without flooding. One of the reasons why winter garlic does not break through in the spring may be the wrong choice of soil. With strong waterlogging, the planting material dies.
The sprouts did not have time to germinate
To make sure that the garlic hasn't just risen, you can dig a couple of cloves from the edge of the garden bed. If everything is in order, the roots have sprouted, then it remains to wait for seedlings, most likely, the correct planting technology was not performed. If the cloves are gone, you can dig up the ridge again and plant other roots in this place.
The garlic should be planted a couple of weeks before colder temperatures are established. You can save yourself from night frosts by mulching with straw or sawdust.
For planting, you need to use soil with a neutral balance. The seeds must be acclimatized to the planting region.
After the snow cover melts, it is recommended to feed the planting with nitrogen fertilizer. It is scattered over moistened beds.
How can the situation be changed
Don't be discouraged if the garlic hasn't sprouted. Follow these steps:
- Determine the cause by digging out the edge of the bed and assess the condition of the teeth.
- If the cloves are frozen, replace them with fresh garlic.
- Do the same with the rotten teeth.
- If everything is in order, do not be upset, seedlings will appear later.
Transplanting garlic in spring
You can just start planting the garlic again. Carry out the work according to the following scheme:
- Prepare the garden bed.
- Dig up the garlic carefully to avoid damaging the root system. Such planting material can be found in the previous bed, usually not dug garlic remains there. Very often, gardeners plant a winter vegetable in the aisles of garden strawberries or near raspberry plantings.
- Place the cloves in the pits and pour liquid.
- Fill with soil, compact the soil next to the roots.
In order for the vegetables to bear the transplant painlessly, the soil must be moist.
In the future, feed with urea and complex fertilizer. Perform the first procedure as soon as 3-4 leaves are formed on the plant. The second is in two to three weeks. The third - in the last days of June.
If you follow the planting technology and follow the recommendations for choosing a garden bed and seeds, then you can not to be afraid that in the future there will be a question why the garlic planted in late autumn could not hatch.
In the end, you should not only plant the cloves of garlic, observing all the rules so that it sprouts in the spring, but also properly care for it in order to get a good harvest.
