Makarov pistol: why modern models have a black handle, if in the USSR it was brown

Today, many people who get their hands on civilian versions of the Makarov Pistol complain that they do not look at all like the legendary Soviet pistol. First of all, many are confused by the black handle of the "Baikal", while the PM from the USSR had a characteristic brown handle all its life. What explains such a difference in design and how things are with the color of the grip on the modern combat version of the pistol?

The Makarov pistol is a real Soviet legend, with which the domestic militia and lower officers in the army are closely associated. The famous 9mm self-loading pistol was designed by the Soviet gunsmith Nikolai Fedorovich Makarov back in 1948. The PM was adopted in 1951 and since then has been invariably guarding the Motherland and public order. At one time, it was created as a replacement for TT pistols and revolvers of the Nagant system that remained in service in the army and law enforcement agencies.

Like many other Soviet weapons, the PM was distinguished by its simplicity of design, had very good firepower. characteristics for its time, and was also relatively cheap, which made it possible to make it really massive. The pistol consists of only 32 parts, has a free breechblock and a layout similar to that used by the German Walther PP. At the same time, several unique design solutions were used in the Soviet pistol, which made it possible to astronomically increase its working resource.

The Soviet PM was easily recognizable not only by its characteristic profile, but also by its specific brown plastic handle. It is noteworthy that today the Kalashnikov concern produces Makarovs with a different external design, namely with a black handle. This, in turn, causes the indignation of many citizens who acquire traumatic and pneumatic models based on modern PM. This is because outwardly they are almost indistinguishable from combat models.

So why not do a classic PM with a brown handle? This is why most modern AKs have black magazines and a forend. The thing is that in the USSR, a different material was used for the production of overhead parts. Handles, magazines, and forend pads were made of thermosetting plastic, also known as bakelite. This simple, durable and cheap material was the best suited for mass weapons. However, in the 1990s, there was a transition to an even more cost-effective "finishing" material - polyamide. That is why Soviet and modern PMs have different handle colors. Bakelite - brown, polyamide - black (sometimes white and transparent).

why Kalashnikov considered the transition from 7.62 to 5.45 by a big mistake.
