Crop rotation planning for the site is very important. Each vegetable requires its own ideal soil composition, and the preceding crop must harmoniously utilize the nutrients in the soil. In this matter, cabbage is a rather controversial predecessor. It takes a lot of useful minerals from the ground, practically emptying it, but in all other respects it is impossible to think of a vegetable more ideal - with good fertilization of the soil after planting cabbage in the next season, you can plant all crops on these beds, except cruciferous.
Pros of cabbage in terms of crop rotation:
- lack of toxic and harmful residues;
- shallow location of the root system;
- unique diseases and pests that are not dangerous for other vegetables.
I start planting cabbage in the same place after 4 years:
- In the first year after harvesting the heads of cabbage, I abundantly fertilize the soil with organic matter.
- In the second year, I take a short break and the usual soil preparation.
- In the third year, I make a large-scale introduction of mineral fertilizers.
- In the fourth year, I carry out a standard feeding.
At this time, when carrying out the procedures, I plant the following crops on the beds:
- pumpkin species;
- zucchini;
- cucumbers;
- squash;
- any greens;
- different types of onions;
- potato;
- eggplant;
- carrot.
In the second year, after the usual feeding, I plant cold-resistant varieties of tomatoes or sweet peppers in open ground.
In principle, a strict prohibition on subsequent planting exists only for crucifers:
- broccoli;
- color;
- Savoyard;
- radish;
- radish ;;
- daikon.
There is not enough soil nutrition for them, and there is a high risk of contracting "family" diseases and parasites.
Among other unwanted followers, I can distinguish the following cultures:
- beans;
- peas;
- beet;
- Strawberry.
They grow worse after cabbage, give a small crop, which does not differ in the quality of the fruit.
The ban period is in effect for four years, while the restorative top dressing of the soil is carried out. However, if the land is needed for planting vegetables earlier, then you can slightly speed up the feeding process by planting green manure grasses (oats, lupines) in the beds. Their cultivation and further mowing significantly improve the health of the land.
A significant advantage of planting cabbage can be called the absence of almost any soil contamination. Therefore, in addition to abundant fertilization, no additional cleaning and serious disinfection will be required.
If you are planning to plant cabbage, you should consider and prescribe further plantings over the next 4 or 5 years. This will greatly facilitate landing and save you unnecessary worries.
