What is important to consider when arranging a flower bed

To break up a flower garden on the site is not such an easy task as it might seem at first glance. It is necessary to have certain knowledge and take into account many different nuances. After all, any mistake can lead to sad results.

  1. First of all, we choose the right place for the flower bed. I broke mine on the south side of the house - this will protect the flowers from the northerly winds. Also note that most plants do not like being in a draft. And the soil should not be excessively waterlogged. Stagnant water in the soil will lead to root rot.
  2. At the chosen place near the house, we determine the natural light. This is necessary for the selection of suitable plants. The light can be bright (at least 7 hours in direct sunlight), diffused (2-3 hours), partial shade and shadow.

  3. Determine the type and acidity of the soil. These characteristics can be corrected by the introduction of organic and mineral fertilizers.

Flower garden planning

Having found out the main characteristics of the place, I proceed to planning the future flower bed. First of all, I decide on its size and shape. According to my observations, I will say that one large flower garden looks better than many small ones. If you have little experience, then you should not try to immediately make a flower garden of complex design and shape. The main thing is to take into account the architectural style of the building and the surrounding landscape when decorating a flower bed. The richer and more varied the architecture of the house, the more modest the flower garden should be and vice versa.

Next, I draw up a plan for the placement of flowers in the flower bed, marking on paper where and which plants to plant. They can be grouped by color, variety, height and flowering time. The flower bed should make up a holistic composition, harmoniously fitting into the surrounding landscape.

When planning a flower garden, I also think about its design in advance - what decorating elements can be added to it and how to decorate the edges.

The main criteria for the selection of plants

The main criteria that I rely on when choosing plants are the conditions in the chosen place, as well as whether the flowers can get along with each other. You should not choose beautiful plants that are too difficult to care for. The more unpretentious the flowers, the better the final result.

When choosing plants, I focus on the following points:

  • Flowering time - varieties that bloom at different times guarantee a beautiful flower garden throughout the season.
  • Perennials do not need to be planted every season.
  • Color palette. Cold shades of blue, blue, green and purple, bright colors are perfect for the background of a flower garden: red, orange and yellow will serve as accents in the composition, whites will smooth out contrasts, and black will set off pattern.
  • Plant height. The tallest specimens are planted in the center of the flower garden, and the shortest ones are planted at its borders.

Stages of creating a flower garden

  1. First, I clear the area for the flower bed. Then I mark its border. If the land is fertile enough, you just need to carefully dig it up and remove the weeds. If the soil is poor, 20 cm of its upper layer should be removed, the sides should be dug in, and drainage should be laid on the bottom, which can be expanded clay, broken brick or crushed stone.
  2. On top, I pour fertile soil with the addition of organic fertilizers, black soil and sand. I level the earth by forming an elevation in the center of the flower bed and a slope to its edges. Before planting the plants, I take a break for two weeks so that the earth settles.
  3. On the eve of planting, I moisten the soil properly. I plant the plants not densely, leaving them room for growth.
  4. I do not forget to take care of the decorated flower garden regularly - I water, fertilize and pull out the weeds in a timely manner. In addition, I regularly cut off faded flowers. This provokes their repeated flowering, especially of such perennials as bell, carnation, delphinium.
