  • Jan 12, 2022

If earlier someone had told me that he gets 10 bags of potatoes from 1 hundred square meters, I would not have believed him. But since I began to grow Dutch varieties on my site, I was convinced that this is not an invention. It turned out that the potatoes bred by breeders from Holland, in addition to over-yielding, have many other advantages. I will tell you which varieties of Dutch potatoes are the most productive, resistant to diseases and unfavorable growing conditions, and the most delicious.

Why do I grow Dutch potatoes at my dacha

Growing for several years on my backyard vegetable of Dutch selection, I noted many of its advantages over domestic potatoes:

  • Unprecedented productivity. From my own experience, I will say that Dutch varieties give a rich harvest of large and beautiful tubers - up to 500 centners per hectare. And if you grow them on black soil in the southern regions, then this figure will be even higher - up to 700-800 centners.

  • Presentation and excellent taste. Dutch potatoes are characterized by smooth tubers with a dense, smooth skin and few eyes.
  • Strong immunity. Dutch potatoes are not afraid of most diseases that this vegetable crop is susceptible to, such as viruses, potato cancer, scab. However, it can be affected by late blight. But in this case, everything is not so bad: the tops suffer from the infection, but not the tubers. It is enough to apply fungicides to effectively resist the disease.
  • Good keeping quality and transportability of the crop.

The best varieties

From my own experience, I was convinced that not all Dutch varieties are equally good. Through trial and error, I was able to establish which overseas potato grows and bears best in our climate.

Impala

One of the best early beers in my opinion is the Impala. In both cold and hot years, it gives a consistently high yield.

The yield index of the Impala is 500 centners per hectare. The bush gives up to 2 dozen tubers, the weight of each of which ranges from 90 to 150 g.

The tubers have an oval shape, yellow flesh, excellent taste. They are distinguished by good keeping quality. I noticed that even at elevated temperatures in storage, these potatoes do not germinate for a long time.

Impala potato bushes are not afraid of nematodes, scab, viruses, cancer. But from late blight, they should be treated in advance, without waiting for characteristic spots to appear on the leaves and the tubers will stop growing.

Latona

Latona is a wonderful medium early Dutch variety, in my opinion.

Its yield reaches 500 centners per hectare. One bush gives up to 2.5 kg of a high-quality crop.

Latona tubers are characterized by an oval-rounded shape. Their weight reaches 120 g. The pulp has a yellow color and a rather pleasant taste.

The potato crop of this variety is well stored, it is not afraid of transportation.

Latona grows well in the climatic conditions of the middle zone. These potatoes are not afraid of either rainy or dry weather. It is distinguished by a very strong immunity: it is not affected by viral diseases, golden nematode, dry rot.

Red Scarlett

Another mid-early Dutch variety that has proven itself well is Red Scarlett.

It also pleases with its over-yielding capacity (up to 500 centners per hectare). Moreover, such a result can be obtained even in a dry lean year and with minimal maintenance of a potato planting.

I also like this variety for its early maturity. If I collect the main crop on the 75th day after planting, then you can eat the first young tubers after 45 days.

Red Scarlett tubers are inherent in a presentation. They are either large or medium in size (weight - from 90 to 130 g). They have an oblong shape, smooth red skin, a minimum of eyes. The pulp is characterized by a pale yellow color.

Such potatoes are not prone to boiling during the cooking process.

This Dutch breeding potato won my sympathy for its super-resistance to diseases and insect pests, to torrential rains and droughts, to any natural disasters. The bushes of this variety are incredibly tenacious.

If you want to harvest a rich potato crop even from a small plot of land, do as I do - grow Dutch potatoes in your country house. It is enough to provide her with minimal care in order to get up to 2.5 kg of beautiful large tubers from the bush.
