Pyracantha is a shrub of extraordinary beauty. Seeing him at my neighbor's dacha, I just could not pass by. During the flowering period, the plant is densely covered with snow-white buds, which are later replaced by no less impressive berries of a bright orange hue.

Description

This is a thorny evergreen plant belonging to the Rosaceae family. There are upright and sprawling shoots. The height of the shrub can reach up to 8 m.

The shoots are densely covered with sharp, small spines. The leaf plate is medium in size, leathery, dark green, with notches along the edges.

Inflorescence corymbose, white. The fruits are similar to an apple, have a bright yellow or orange color.

Due to the lush flowering and abundant fruiting of the pyracantha, it received high marks for its decorative qualities.

However, the plant has a significant disadvantage - it actively grows and blooms in warm, southern regions and does not tolerate frost at all.

Choice of landing site

I placed the shrub in a place with bright lighting, but in such a way that during the active sun it was in the shade, otherwise the leaves turn yellow.

To do this, I determined the place for landing near a residential building, so the pyracantha is additionally protected from strong winds and drafts.

Landing Rules

In order for the southern beauty to take root well and please with its decorative appearance, I recommend that you follow certain rules when planting.

So, I started the event in early spring. As soon as the snow melted.

For a week I prepared a place for landing:

  1. I dug the site to a depth of 0.4 m.
  2. Carefully leveled with a garden rake.
  3. In addition, he introduced a perogen, using 5 kg per 1 m2.
  4. The landing hole was dug 0.6 m deep.
  5. The bottom was drained with expanded clay (pebbles, crushed stone or broken bricks are also suitable).
  6. He drove a stake in such a way that it towered 50 cm above the ground.
  7. He poured a mixture of humus, peat and topsoil around the support.
  8. He placed the seedling in the center, carefully spreading the root system over the surface of the earth.
  9. Sprinkled with earth and slightly compacted so that voids did not form.
  10. Plentifully watered with soft, well-settled water.

After the soil had settled slightly, I tied the young plant to the support. The soil around was mulched with a layer of peat.

Aftercare

Pyracantha is a rather unpretentious plant. The only problem I faced was to provide a good shelter for the heat-loving southern woman for the winter.

Watering the shrub prefers systematic and is highly resistant to drought. I recommend shedding established seedlings no more than once a week, even on the hottest days.

After adding moisture, I carefully loosen the soil and select plant residues.

I apply top dressing at the root twice during the growing season:

  • At the moment of active growth. I use compositions with a high concentration of nitrogen.
  • At the end of summer. I use complex fertilizers.

A mandatory measure to maintain the high decorative qualities of pyracantha is systematic pruning. I do two types:

  • Sanitary. I remove broken, dry shoots.
  • Formative. I maintain the shape of a bush.

I recommend carefully preparing the bush for wintering:

  1. Trim 1/3 of the length of the shoots.
  2. Carry out wet irrigation.
  3. Spud the plant high.
  4. Mulch with straw.
  5. Cover with agrofibre.

So, it is quite possible to grow a pyracanthus in the conditions of the middle lane. To do this, it is enough to choose the right place for landing, carry out the event in accordance with all the rules and arrange care. Cover the plant for the winter. Then it will actively grow and delight the eye with its exotic beauty.
