The only place on the border of the USSR through which the German army could not break through into the country

It was not difficult for the German troops to cross the border of the Soviet Union almost everywhere along its length. It took them only a few weeks to get inside the country. But there is an exception. For the entire duration of the war, the Germans never managed to advance deep into the USSR in the far north.

At the very beginning of the Second World War, the USSR experienced real horror. German troops swept through the positions of the Soviet army very rapidly. It took them weeks to occupy almost all of Belarus and the Baltic States and a large territory of Ukraine. Divisions of the Red Army remained on the battlefield. Many thousands of Soviet soldiers were surrounded, who were looking for at least some opportunity to get to their own.

But there was one exception. Not everywhere the enemy was able to win. The stumbling block for the Germans was the extreme north of the Soviet Union. No matter how hard they tried, they could not overcome the defenses of the Soviet army near Mustu-Tunturi. This ridge is located almost at the border.

In the Arctic, the Second World War reached later than the rest of the territory of the state, for a whole week. The army of Germans and Finns crossed the border only on 29 June. She continued to advance in the direction of Kandalaksha, as well as Murmansk. Parts of "Norway", under the command of General E. Ditl, moved along the shores of the Arctic Ocean. They were supposed to capture two peninsulas. One of them is Rybachy, and the second is Medium. A. Golovko said about these objects that whoever owns them has the Kola Bay under control. And without him, there will be no Northern Fleet either.

Having destroyed a number of frontier posts and overcoming the resistance of the 95th Infantry Regiment, the Germans reached Musta-Tunturi. The ridge is located from the state border at a distance of six kilometers. They were going to take it almost immediately. But here they were in for a huge disappointment, which became clear only with time.

The command of the Soviet Union initially believed that the enemy would attack the peninsulas from the sea. In this regard, the main forces were concentrated on Rybachy, where everyone was expecting an enemy landing. During the attack on the ridge, our troops, who were here for defense, lost to the Germans by the number of soldiers by 5 times.

But even being in the minority, as long as there were no reinforcements, the Soviet soldiers successfully held the line. The firing points were equipped practically on bare stones. Wire fences were erected there and mines were laid. A fierce struggle was waged for every shelter made of stone, for every meter of territory.

In those places where the Germans still managed to break through, and they went down to the isthmus, they came under serious fire arrived to help our artillery, as well as warships "Kuibyshev" and "Uritsky", which have already approached shore. The fighting for the ridge continued until mid-September. The constant failures of the Germans led to the fact that they stopped storming and began to gain a foothold in the positions they had already occupied.

WITH. Kabanov, a lieutenant general, later recalled that on the slopes from the northern part, the steep central and not so steep western and eastern, there were seven of our strongholds. On the more favorable slopes on the south side, the enemy sat down. Between the strongholds of the two sides there was a neutral zone, the width of which was fifty to sixty meters, and in some places it was not wider than twenty-five to thirty meters. There were grenade battles every day. Everything that happened from both sides was perfectly audible.

The Germans could see everything perfectly. Therefore, delivering provisions, building materials and ammunition, our soldiers regularly came under fire. There were no wounded or dead. The enemy was especially annoyed by the Soviet border sign A-36, preserved from the old days. Before the war with the Finns, there was a border here, but in 1940, according to the Moscow Peace Treaty, it was moved a little to the west. It happened that the Germans knocked down this sign, but ours immediately installed it again.

Musta-Tunturi was a stumbling block for the German army until the time when ours in 1944, at the end, drove it out of this region. None of the attempts to get into this place deep into the Soviet state ended successfully.
