The male lion is a formidable predator, strong and dangerous, but only at a young age, in the prime of his life. The best period is the first five to ten years of his life. After this time, old age comes, which means it's time to make way for the younger generation. In terms of human life, he is waiting for a “retirement”. Of course, desire has nothing to do with it. Just a younger and stronger male will drive away the old and weak.
Briefly about the life of a lion
Approximately at the age of five or six, a male, full of strength and energy, who was previously expelled from his native pride, together with other similar lions, captures someone else's pride. At the same time, he either kills or drives away the leader, who is less strong and older.
At first, females treat such uninvited guests with caution, especially when they are left without cubs. Over time, they get used to their position and accept new living conditions. As soon as this happens, the real royal life begins for the lion. Most often, he lies quietly somewhere in the shade, waiting for an invitation to dine.
In some cases, he also hunts himself. But basically, the leader saves strength, as he must always be in shape and protect his own territory from competitors, other male lions. To stay in shape, he needs to eat well and get plenty of rest.
As a rule, the lion is in power for about two or three years, no more. If the alliance of adult males is quite strong, then this period can be extended to four to five years. Be that as it may, but the lion gradually grows old and, as a result, loses strength and shape. In addition, young males full of strength and prospects enter the arena, with whom it is becoming more and more difficult to compete.
As a result, the lion is expelled from the pride. For a predator, this event is very painful. In fact, he receives a huge psychological trauma due to the experienced mental pain and humiliation. But the lion has no choice and has to live somehow. The only question is how?
If before that the male had reliable protection, which was provided to him by lionesses, then from now on everything has to be taken care of on his own. Age does not allow the lion to find another pride and he becomes a loner. That is, you have to look for food, sit in ambush, hide from potential danger, fight hyenas and run away from elephants and buffaloes yourself. If a young male, whose age is from two to four years old, is expelled from the pride, he has a much greater chance of survival. After all, this is the period when the lion is only gaining strength.

But with an elderly male, the situation is exactly the opposite. Day by day he becomes weaker and more difficult for him to get his own food. He loses body weight, becomes decrepit. Old lions die, as a rule, from the teeth of hyenas and other carnivorous representatives of the animal world.
