On long winter evenings, I not only rest, but also begin to sow seeds for seedlings. Naturally, not all in a row, but only distinguished by a long period of germination and development. I make up for the short daylight hours with the help of phytolamps. I share with you a personal selection of crops that are best sown in January.
The gardener's passion is flowers
The largest number of crops that are germinated on window sills in January - early February are flowers. For the most part, they are quite capricious, and up to 170 days can pass from sowing to flowering.
eustoma
I never put eustoma seeds in the soil. I always scatter them on the surface of the soil and carefully moisten them with a spray bottle. I cover the container with seeds with glass or a film, which I remove after 14 days, as soon as the seedlings hatch. After 35-45 days after the emergence of shoots, I carry out a pick. Eustoma, ascended at the end of January, will bloom by the end of June.
hybrid vervain
Verbena seeds are difficult to germinate, to help them, I pre-soak them in any available growth stimulant. Then I distribute the seeds over the surface of the soil, water from the spray bottle, cover. The first shoots of verbena appear in 14-20 days. Flowering will begin at the end of April.
Snapdragon
Another species, the seeds of which should not be buried in the soil. The appearance of the first shoots will take from 7 to 12 days. I pick up seedlings in a month.
garden carnation
I carry out surface grooves in the soil with a depth of 3 mm. I spread the seeds of cloves at a distance of 2 cm from each other and sprinkle with soil. I water the crops and cover the container with a bag. Before germination (10-14 days), I shade the container, protecting it from direct sunlight. The time from sowing to the flowering of carnations takes 6 months.
Pelargonium
Pelargonium seeds must be freed from integumentary scales before sowing. I sow only in moist and loose soil and sprinkle them with soil by 1 cm. Next, package, regular moisture and germination after 2 weeks.
In addition to the listed flowers, in January it is worth starting the germination of the following types:
- spurge multiflora;
- petunia;
- garden lobelia;
- Carpathian bell;
- echinacea purpurea;
- the bastard is graceful;
- primrose;
- catharanthus;
- hybrid delphinium;
- begonia;
- aquilegia;
- lavender.
January-February sowing of vegetables
In January and early February, I grow heat-loving vegetables that have a long development period.
Leek
This onion variety grows quite successfully even in central Russia, but on one condition - its seeds must be sown for seedlings in winter. The thing is that from the emergence of seedlings to the planting of leeks, 2 months pass.
I advise you to sow leek seeds immediately in separate pots with drainage holes. The minimum depth of the container should be 10 cm.
Onion seeds can be specially prepared, processed with various nutritional compounds, and then they do not require any preparation from you. Otherwise, they must be placed in a cloth moistened with a weak growth stimulant for 24 hours. I place the seeds in the soil to a depth of 1 cm, moisten, cover. Shoots appear in 15-20 days.
Celery
I soak celery seeds for 2 days in a cloth bag to wash essential oils out of them that slow down germination. I change the water every 5-6 hours.
I sow celery in a box at a depth of 5 mm and at a distance of 2 cm from each other. I moisturize, cover, after 2 weeks I rejoice at the shoots.
It turns out that in January and the first days of February I mostly grow flowers. I would be glad to read the reviews of those who have discovered more vegetable crops, which can be sown at the beginning of the year.
