Any weapon is always the result of compromises. There is no ideal and absolutely utilitarian weapon. Just like any other instrument. The most striking illustration of this thesis can be safely considered the domestic pistol OTs-27 "Berdysh". The weapon, on the one hand, is not very well known to the masses, but is widely used in the power structures of Russia.
In the Ministry of the Interior there is such a unit as private security. It deals with the protection of especially valuable items, objects and individuals. And today it is the private security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation that is the main operator of the OTs-27 Berdysh pistols, which were put into service back in 2002. Since 2006, a number of 27s have been used by the Federal State Unitary Enterprise Okhrana, as well as the Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation. In the case of the latter, the Berdysh is mainly used as an individual weapon for investigators and prosecutors. In addition, since 2005, the Berdysh has also become one of the types of premium weapons in Russia.
The pistol was developed within the walls of TsKIB SOO in the early 1990s. They worked on its creation in the Tula Design Bureau I. I AM. Stechkin and B. V. Avraamov. From the very beginning, the Berdysh was conceived as a new army pistol. The new weapon was first shown in 1994 at an exhibition in Moscow. However, the weapon did not pass the army competition, and they decided to remake it for the needs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Like many other domestic pistols of that time, the OTs-27 is almost entirely made of steel. With a mass of 0.93 kg, the weapon has a length of 200 mm, a width of 35 mm and a height of 143 mm. The pistol uses a hammer-type percussion mechanism with a double-action trigger. Equipped with a double-sided fuse and open sights. By its design, the Berdysh is extremely simple, and therefore very cheap and at the same time reliable. One of the important design features is the ability to fire both from the left and from the right hand.

Another important detail of the 27th is that it is produced in a variety of calibers, unlike most domestically produced pistols of that time. The weapon can be adapted for 7.62x25mm TT, 9x19mm, 9x19mm PM and 9x19mm PMM cartridges. Ammunition is carried out from box magazines for 15 or 18 rounds, depending on the caliber.
