All gardeners know that tomatoes have a very delicate root system, which is easily deformed when picking. That is why most experts advise planting tomato seeds for seedlings immediately in peat cups, so that when transplanting seedlings into open ground, they are less injured.
We prepare the seeds
Before sowing tomato seeds, I always prepare them:
- I process from diseases and pests;
- soak in a growth stimulant;
- I soak in mineral fertilizers.
As a preventive measure for pests and diseases, I recommend soaking the seeds in an ordinary weak solution of potassium permanganate for several hours, and then rinsing the seed with running water.
As for the growth stimulator, seed treatment contributes to their faster germination in the ground.
Benefits of peat pots
Peat pots are low-lying peat that is shaped into pots. Usually it is impregnated with growth stimulants and various fertilizers. The advantages of growing seedlings in this way, I attribute:
- the possibility of planting seedlings in open ground without damaging the roots;
- compactness and ergonomics;
- good and nutritious composition of the soil;
- ease of use.
Features of growing tomatoes in peat tablets
They are compressed pieces of lowland peat, and they contain a large amount of substances useful for seedlings. The main advantages of growing tomatoes in peat tablets are:
- a sufficient amount of nutrients;
- ease of transportation and storage;
- compact dimensions.
Growing Tomatoes in Coconut Tablets
They are made from compressed coconut fibers, which are placed in a fine mesh. Additionally, such containers are impregnated with nutrients. I use coconut tablets for seed germination, picking, cuttings.
The benefits of growing tomatoes in coconut tablets include:
- maximum protection of seedlings from fungal infections;
- absence of pest larvae and weed seeds;
- the ability to preserve the root system of seedlings when transplanted into open ground.
Growing tomatoes in plastic cups
This option is used by summer residents most often. Since the main advantages of growing tomato seeds in plastic containers are:
- availability in terms of price;
- ease of growing seedlings and its transportation;
- the ability to use the container several times;
- the ability to sign seedling varieties with a marker.
Seedling bags
You can also sow tomato seeds in special bags. I list their benefits as:
- the presence of drainage holes;
- flat bottom;
- seam strength;
- affordable cost;
- saving space.
As can be seen from all of the above, tomato seeds can be grown in any container. Each gardener prefers the option that suits him both in terms of price and convenience in growing seedlings.
