Since ancient times, water transport has been one of the cheapest and at the same time effective ways of transporting a wide variety of goods. Nowadays, the world economy needs tens and hundreds of thousands of tons of cargo every day. At the same time, modern technologies make it possible to create ships of truly gigantic dimensions. Today we will talk about the largest of them.
Note: deadweight - the maximum sum of the masses of all cargo and crew members carried by a ship, including fuel, food and water supplies.
1. Prelude FLNG
Not just a ship, but a floating plant for the production of liquefied gas. The length of the ship is 488 meters, and the deadweight reaches 600,000 tons. The hull of the floating plant was launched back in 2013, while construction work on the Prelude FLNG continued until 2017. Today, the ship operates in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Australia.
2. Knock Nevis
The largest oil tanker ever built. Operated by Norway from 1979 to 2009. The length of this giant was 458 meters, and the deadweight reached 564 thousand tons. The tanker had a very eventful career. Once it even sank due to an Iranian missile hit during the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, after which it was raised and towed for repairs. In 2009, the ship was scrapped as having worked its resource.
3. Pierre Guillaumat
Another incredibly large oil tanker that was built in France in 1977. The unique ship lived only 5 years. Already in 1983, he was driven to South Korea, where he was allowed to be scrapped. The reason for this was the low commercial efficiency of the giant. The ship, among other things, could not pass through the Suez Canal. The length of Pierre Guillaumat was 414 meters. Deadweight reached 555 thousand tons.
4. Esso Atlantic
A tanker that has long been engaged in the transport of liquid cargo between the Middle East and Europe. First of all, Esso Atlantic transported oil and fuel oil, but also carried chemical reagents. The tanker 406 meters long was launched in 1977. Operated until 2002. The deadweight of the ship was 516 thousand tons.
5. Emma Maersk
Not unique in its kind, but only the first of eight built super-container ships. Vessels of this class are still sailing, despite the fact that the authorities of some countries regularly criticize them for being uneconomical. Specifically, Emma Maersk has a bad reputation at all: even during construction, there was a big fire on the ship. Today ships fly the Danish flag. The hull length is 397 meters. Deadweight - 156 thousand tons. Year of launching - 2006.

6. T.I. Class
The class of ships with the largest gross tonnage to date. In total, 4 TI ships were assembled at the shipyards. Subsequently, two tankers were converted into floating platforms. All vessels are still in operation. The hull length is 380 meters. The deadweight of tankers is 441 thousand tons.
7. Vale Sohar
The largest cargo ship in the history of the fleet. There is Vale Sohar not in a single version. In total, more than 30 such ships were built. They are primarily used to transport ore from South America to other parts of the world. The length of dry cargo ships is 362 meters. Deadweight - 400 thousand tons. The first ship was launched in 2012.
