Almost five years with MGTS GPON home Internet

  • Feb 15, 2022

In the summer of 2017, I was connected to my home Internet via "optics" and since then it has been working almost perfectly. Now I have a tariff of 250 Mbps and this speed is quite real.

Almost five years with MGTS GPON home Internet

Just in case, I'll start with the fact that this is not an advertising post and no one asked me to write it.

A huge plus of GPON technology is that the optical cable comes to the apartment directly from the telephone exchange, without any active equipment along the way.

For a long time, optical cables have been laid on every staircase in Moscow.

Each apartment has its own thin vein.

Thanks to this connection, the probability of any failures is much lower than with traditional Internet providers with many routers and cables along the way from the provider to the apartment.

This is how the connection of an optical cable to a modem router looks like.

All these years I have been using the SERCOMM RV6699 router, which was given out for free when connected. It has four gigabit ports, it supports Wi-Fi - 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, there is a schedule for turning Wi-Fi on and off (for me it automatically turns off from one in the morning until seven in the morning).

There is a USB port with the ability to connect USB drives and access them via FTP and Samba, but I never used it, since there is a network storage nearby. And the router also has a connector for a regular phone, which allows a landline phone to work through GPON.

And here is one trick. I don’t know how it is now, but five years ago everyone was offered to switch a landline phone to it when connecting a GPON, and this destroys its last advantage - operation during a power outage. Fortunately, there is an alternative: you can leave the landline phone (if any), leaving it on a wired connection, and connect GPON to a separate virtual number with a separate personal account. It costs exactly the same, but the Internet and the landline phone will not be connected in any way.

Now MGTS has a minimum tariff of 500 rubles per month for 200 Mbit / s, but there are all sorts of promotions and special offers (my 250 Mbit / s costs 390 rubles per month, but you can’t connect to such a tariff now). There are also all sorts of combo tariffs with television, but I didn’t understand them - Youtube is enough for me.

When I was connected to GPON in 2017, I was afraid that it might not work very well, but over the past four and a half years, the Internet has disappeared only twice and for a maximum of fifteen minutes. I think this is a great result.
