The weeds have not yet woken up, the black beds look dull, only the daffodils victoriously bloomed their magnificent flowers. They are all over the place in my yard. I walk to the house along the path, and they smile at me from the flower beds and rabatok.
Reasons for transplanting daffodils
Daffodils grow quickly. In dense plantings, these plants bloom poorer, so you often have to change their place. Why do I change them:
- close landing interferes with development;
- flowering is not so lush or completely absent;
- I want to multiply
- for the prevention of flower diseases.
I usually transplant when the planted plants are three to five years old. By this time they are growing well. When I plant young bulbs, I do not touch them for three years, since they are ready for flowering only two years after planting, and after three they can be propagated.
Timing for transplant
Daffodils can be repotted at any time, even when in bloom. But if you want to see flowering, do as I did in late summer or early autumn.
Spring planting of daffodils is possible, but they are unlikely to bloom in the same season. They need to take root, and this takes at least a month.
Autumn transplant
Daffodils planted in September have time to take root before the onset of cold weather. I planted them in October and the survival rate was very good.
Choose a place
In a sunny place, this culture blooms better, but partial shade is also suitable for it. Near my house, where the sun shines for only three hours a day, daffodils grow and bloom, although not so abundantly. Plants planted in partial shade bloom longer, and under the sun they bloom quickly and finish flowering just as quickly.
A place where groundwater is close is not suitable for these plants: the bulbs will begin to rot. I do the drainage for landing myself. When preparing the beds, I lay small pebbles or broken bricks on the bottom.
Sandy soil for planting is undesirable: it freezes deeply, and plantings may die. And it contains little nutrition for flowers.
I add peat and humus to heavy clay soil so that it becomes loose and can pass oxygen and water.
preparing the ground
It is necessary to prepare the soil for planting daffodils in advance. It should take at least two weeks from the time of digging, and preferably a month. How do I do it:
- I dig a bed;
- I bring in humus (a bucket per 1 sq. m);
- I put in 2 tbsp. l. superphosphate and 1 tbsp. l. potassium salt per 1 sq. m.
How to choose planting material
I dig out the bulbs intended for transplantation after the end of flowering, when the leaves turn yellow. What I do after that:
- I clean the bulbs from the ground and inspect. Instances with signs of disease, deformed or rotting destroy.
- I wash healthy bulbs with water and disinfect with potassium permanganate, soaking in its solution for 20 minutes.
- I put them in boxes in one layer and send them to dry under a canopy where there is ventilation.
Dried material is ready for planting.
How to plant daffodils
How to plant daffodils, everyone chooses for himself. For me, they grow somewhere in a group, somewhere in rows, depending on their function. I like group planting when they look like a bouquet. How do I plant bulbs:
- having removed the top layer of soil, I pour river sand and ash;
- I spread the bulbs, keeping a distance of 5-10 cm (the more onions, the greater the distance between them);
- I fall asleep with earth.
I plant onions to a depth of 7-10 cm, so they will be warmer in winter, and they are guaranteed not to freeze.
The procedure for transplanting daffodils is simple, any gardener can handle it, even the one who picked up a shovel for the first time in his life.
