Two harvests in a summer: we plant radishes again and enjoy the taste for as long as possible

Strong crunchy radish with a characteristic point appears on the tables along with the first greens. It is traditionally sown among the first. And after the collection, they release the bed for something else.

Not all radish lovers plant it twice in a season. Either there is not enough space, or... they simply do not think about it.

Planting radishes for the second time

Mid-June to August is the time of long daylight hours and the sowing of late (winter) radish varieties. They grow more slowly than early ones, but are larger, have a more pronounced taste and are stored for a long time. They are not afraid of the heat, there would be good watering. They are not afraid of frost either. Spring varieties are used in salads, winter varieties are suitable for soups and stews.

Recommended varieties

Spring varieties can also be planted for the second harvest. They are not stored for storage, but immediately fall on the table. I prefer French breakfast and Icicle to all varieties. They are oblong in shape, it is convenient to cut them into rings. Yes, and the harvest will please 25 days after planting.

Winter varieties ripen longer - up to 2 months. These are Chinese rose, Chinese white, Round black Spanish radish.

Landing time

The information on the seed bag and knowledge of the weather conditions in the region will help determine the date. Usually I take into account the time of the first frosts, deviate from it by a month + for the period of the growing season indicated on the package.

We are preparing a garden

The earth for radishes is dug up very finely, breaking with a frequent rake. Otherwise, tender root crops, breaking through the clods, are deformed. Ash or chalk is poured into acidic soil, clay soil is diluted with sand, peat or perlite. As top dressing make rotted manure.

Advice. Places where cruciferous plants (radish, cabbage) used to grow are not suitable for planting. From the predecessors in the soil, pathogens inherent in this family may remain.

Cooking seeds

Radishes have good germination. Even from a bag that has been stored for three years, almost all seeds will sprout. To soak them or not - look at the label.

Purchased seeds are disinfected. But if you doubt their quality or are going to use your planting material, it is better to decontaminate the seeds before planting. There are two ways:

  • holding in hot (+60 degrees) water for 10-15 minutes;
  • treatment with a solution of any fungicide 20 min.

Both help destroy fungal spores and prevent radish diseases.

Seeding technique

If you haven't soaked the seeds, don't worry, they will sprout. Because before planting, you will shed the beds very well. Landings are made in rows with a width of 15-20 cm, focusing on the width of the chopper.

The grooves are shallow: the seeds should be close to the surface. To avoid thickening, they are mixed with several handfuls of wet sand before planting. Lightly sprinkled with earth, without deepening.

If the seedlings still grow too thick, they are thinned out, leaving the largest and zigzag them to fit more in the garden.

radish care

  • Watering. The ground should remain moist, but without stagnant water. It is better to water a little every other day or two than to fill it to the state of a swamp once a week.
  • Periodic loosening and mulching of the soil, weeding.
  • Top dressing with organic fertilizers (if you did not apply them before planting!)
  • If necessary - treatment from pests or fungus.

Storage

"Winter" radishes are harvested before frost. Do not overtighten, otherwise it will overripe and become hollow. It will lie in a dry cool storage until spring.
