However, if you look at the photographs of tankers from other countries, then with the possible exception of the French and Americans, nothing like this will be found on their heads. First of all, it protects a person's head from possible injuries in the event that the most important part of the body hits some metal part or tank wall. In addition, in the vast majority of cases, personal communication means are built into the headset - a walkie-talkie that allows the crew to communicate with each other despite the terrible roar of the engine and the noise from shots.
Before the start of the Great Patriotic War in Germany, there were no headsets familiar to many compatriots. Instead, German tankers used very specific berets made from woolen cloth. From the inside, the beret was strengthened with felt-fabric pillows, which, in fact, performed the function of a headset. The main problem with the beret was that it was used separately from tank headphones. The means of intercom had to be worn over the beret, which was frankly inconvenient.

The first experience of using berets in real combat conditions showed that it was not very convenient for tankmen to work in them, which is why they were almost completely abandoned already in 1941. German tankers completely switched to the use of conventional combined arms caps without any protective elements. The absence of a protective helmet in the case of Wehrmacht tanks was partially offset by the simple fact that German tanks were among the most spacious and comfortable during the war years, and therefore the helmet is essentially not required.
