All varieties of potatoes, of which there are now more than four thousand in the world, differ not only in terms of ripening, but also in taste, as well as in terms of their ripening. In my middle region of Russia, as well as in the northern part of the country, the medium-late Lorch variety is considered excellent for cultivation. How best to grow this potato, I will tell in the article.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Lorch potatoes are harvested approximately 3.5-4 months after planting. This species is almost a century old, the variety was brought out by the Moscow breeder Alexander Lorkh.

The plant is a medium bush about 80 centimeters high. During flowering, purple-red corollas bloom, leaving almost no berries behind.

Root crops are large, beige in color and weighing from 100 grams. There are few eyes and they are evenly distributed over the potato. The flesh of the potato is soft and white, does not tend to darken when heated. The yield is quite high: under each bush there are a dozen and a half tubers. They can be mashed, boiled, stewed and fried. This variety is not suitable only for making chips, as it contains a large amount of starch.

Pros and cons of growing

On the positive side, I would note that it can be grown even in the northern region, it does not care about the composition of the soil, the amount of top dressing. But the main thing is that it has an excellent yield, practically does not get sick, is transportable and lies remarkably.

Of the minuses - not resistant to scab, cancer, does not tolerate heat and drought.

planting potatoes

As with any other variety, Lorch potatoes give a high yield if planted on time and correctly. You should not save on planting material.

Potatoes should be planted in a sunny area of the garden, where there are no drafts and wind. In the shade of culture, it will not bloom and develop well.

Soil composition

Lorch potatoes are not whimsical at all, but still the best yields are obtained by growing on soils with a low clay content. It is better if it is loam or sandy soil. It is not superfluous to apply organic fertilizers, such as manure, before planting. Every 1 m² I use 4-6 kilograms of fertilizer.

Planting material preparation

For planting, medium-sized tubers should be selected, without damage, rot and a large number of eyes. A week before planting, I dry the potatoes, and then soak them in a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate. I do not cut the tubers into pieces, as I believe that this reduces the yield.

Landing pattern

Since the bushes are quite sprawling, I make a distance of 40 centimeters between the holes and leave 80 centimeters in the aisle. The planting depth of tubers of this variety should be 10 centimeters.

Care

Growing potatoes of the Lorch variety does not differ from the care of other plants of this crop:

  1. Watering potatoes need plentiful. Moisturize it should be at least 3-4 times a month. Each bush needs at least four liters of water.
  2. It is best to feed with compost or manure. I do this three times a season: at planting, before the first hilling and during flowering.
  3. Hilling should be done twice: when the sprouts reach a size of 15 centimeters, and the second - 14 days after the first.
  4. Potatoes are constantly loosened and mulched, and also weeded as needed.

If you do not follow the rules, potatoes can get scab or cancer. To combat ailments, diseased plants are destroyed, and the soil is sprinkled with lime.

Harvest and storage

Dig up potatoes 120 days after planting. Harvesting occurs around the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. I plan the procedure for a dry and warm day. I dry the fruits and put them in boxes. I store the crop in the cellar at a temperature of + 4... + 7 ° C and air humidity not higher than 85%.

When choosing which variety of potato to plant in your area, take a closer look at the Lorch variety. It is unpretentious, gives high yields and is perfectly stored until the next harvest.
