Main characteristics of asparagus

It is a perennial plant that may have a shrub or herb, depending on the variety. Not only external signs differ, but also the types of the root system.

The tallest erect and smooth stems can reach 1.5 m in height. They are covered with a small number of medium-sized scaly leaves.

The flowering period is at the end of May - beginning of June. At this moment, the plants cover small inflorescences, in place of which berries appear at the end of summer.

I note that only 20 cm of sprouts are used in cooking. They have a short ripening period, buds appear, and asparagus itself quickly loses its taste.

I eat asparagus fresh, stewed, steamed and marinated. Part of the harvest is frozen for the winter.

There are several varieties of this plant:

  • white;
  • green;
  • purple.

White is grown in areas protected from sunlight.

Violet is more capricious and requires careful care.

I planted green on my site, as the most unpretentious and with high taste.

Features of growing crops

Asparagus prefers areas with fertile and loose soil. I grow it in a joint planting with crops such as:

  • spinach;
  • salad;
  • basil;
  • parsley;
  • tomato.

There are several methods for growing asparagus. I will dwell on them in more detail.

Seeds for seedlings

One of the most difficult and time-consuming ways. Unfortunately, it does not always give a positive result.

I recommend using the seedling method.

Seeds must first be prepared:

  1. Disinfect in a solution with aloe juice. To do this, I recommend taking 1 tbsp of juice, diluting it in 1 liter of water and soaking the planting material for 2 hours.
  2. Germinate by soaking the seeds with water and placing them in a warm place.

Only then carry out sowing in previously prepared soil. Close the top with a film and wait for shoots.

It will take at least 6 weeks for the seeds to germinate because asparagus grows very slowly. As soon as shoots have appeared, I carefully moisten the planting, apply peat and a small amount of mineral fertilizers.

A month later, as soon as the seedlings have reached 15 cm, picks are carried out in separate containers.

Young plants are transplanted into open ground in the second half of June.

root method

I grow asparagus using this method because it is not as difficult as seedlings and is more successful.

Landing is carried out in the fall, at the end of October. But I recommend preparing the site in the spring:

  1. Dig carefully.
  2. Apply 1 kg of organic fertilizer per 1 m2.

In the fall, 21 days before planting, I dig up the bed again and add magnesium sulfate.

Next, I carry out the division of the root system of an already adult plant. I do the procedure with a sharp, thoroughly disinfected instrument.

I put the roots in holes 5 cm deep, cover with a small layer of soil on top. I water thoroughly.

If the winter is frosty, I recommend insulating the planting with spruce branches.

With this method, I get the harvest next year.

Summing up, I want to say that growing asparagus is quite problematic. But if you follow all the rules for planting, water and fertilize on time, then the result will be a delicious harvest, which is important to harvest on time. It can be eaten raw, pickled or frozen for the winter.
