Growing cucumbers on your site is a rather troublesome business. After all, this is one of the most delicate and capricious crops in our garden. And I faced the problem that lack of care or excessive watering negatively affects growth and development. Sometimes the leaves of cucumbers can be covered with various kinds of spots. This is an alarming sign of the first symptoms of a plant disease. A neglected disease will lead to the death of the fetus. Detecting the problem early is essential to saving the crop.
Why do they appear? Due to improper care, pests, infection. High humidity and lack of care help spores to spread over large areas.
You can transfer infected spores with the help of dirty tools with which you could previously handle diseased plants without knowing it. The bacteria are also carried by rain, wind, and the remains of infected vegetation.
Therefore, in order to avoid the transfer of infection to a neighboring area, after each pruning or weeding, I always process the tools.
The fungus develops very actively at high humidity and low temperatures. Therefore, it is important to control soil moisture. When it rains a lot, I cover the plants to keep them from rotting. Cucumbers are often grown in greenhouses. But there may be a temperature difference. Bacteria and fungi thrive in a humid environment, which occurs due to temperature changes due to improper ventilation. Therefore, drafts in the greenhouse are unacceptable!
Also, the development of plants is affected by lighting and the condition of the soil. If you do not change the soil for several seasons, it can become a breeding ground for various pests.
open ground
There is less humidity outside the greenhouse, apart from heavy rainfall. If you overdo it with watering, rotting may begin, and with weak watering, the plants dry out. This leads to weakened immunity and increased vulnerability to pathogens.
How to protect cucumber leaves?
At the initial stage, an iodine solution will help. To prepare it, I take a glass of water and two drops of iodine, carefully treat the affected areas. Start processing immediately after preparing the solution so that it does not run out of steam.
With a large area of damage and in a neglected state, antifungal drugs and insecticides come to the rescue.
Folk ways
If you find spots on the leaves at the beginning of development, you can use folk remedies that are safer and cheaper.
- I insist one glass of ash and 10 liters of water for a day and spray it on the leaves and water it. It is not only a protection against pests, but also serves as a fertilizer. Or I sprinkle the leaves and soil around the planting with dry ash.
- Mustard solution - 2 tbsp. l. powder per 10 liters of water. Spray the plant generously.
- A weak solution of potassium permanganate with iodine and brilliant green, 20 drops per bucket of water.
- Create an acidic environment for pathogens of many diseases, from which they die. This will help us 1 liter of whey mixed in 10 liters of water. Irrigate cucumber beds with this solution. You can also use milk and two drops of iodine in a bucket of water.
- Tincture of celandine, dandelion, onion peel or chopped garlic serve as a prevention of the development of the disease.
Spores can move to cucumbers and from neighboring beds, so I also process the area around the cucumbers.
When processing, it is important to follow the instructions, dosage rules and processing time. With a large area of damage, the plant must be pulled out and burned.
These simple protective measures and good care will help protect cucumbers. The main thing is to control soil moisture.
