Some gardeners are wondering: is it possible to plant garlic in the spring? I will immediately answer that it is possible. Today we will talk about growing spring garlic and learn about the features of this method.
Soil preparation and timing of planting garlic
I plant spring garlic after April 15-20. I advise you not to delay planting, since the vegetation of spring garlic lasts longer than that of winter garlic, and it must gain strength for further development.
Choose a sunny, elevated place with light loam. If the soil is acidic, it should be limed; ash powder can be added to alkaline soil.
If you did not have time to add organic matter before winter, you need to do this two weeks before planting. This will require humus in proportion: one bucket per 1 sq. m beds. The day before planting, you need to loosen the soil.
Preparing garlic cloves for planting
Spring garlic is propagated by cloves. Before buying garlic in a store, you need to ask if the selected variety is suitable for planting in your area. In mid-latitudes, the following varieties can be used:
- Nugget;
- Abrek;
- Aleisky;
- Victoria.
Before planting, sort the planting material - carefully divide the bulbs into teeth and take the strongest, intact ones. Pay attention that the bottoms are not dry and the roots are visible on them.
Place the selected garlic in a moistened cloth and put it on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for seven days. This way you will speed up the germination process.
Before planting in the ground, soak the cloves for 10-12 hours in a warm liquid. Optionally, you can process them in weak potassium permanganate or in a growth stimulator.

Plant garlic in well-moistened and loosened soil. Place the cloves in the prepared grooves to a depth of no more than 3-4 cm. If the land on the site is not loose enough, I advise you to pour a mixture of sand and ash powder into the furrows.
Place planting material at a distance of 5-6 cm from each other. The interval between rows should be at least 15-20 cm. Do not press garlic hard into the ground and sprinkle with a large layer of earth. Crops do not need to be covered with foil.
But to cover the beds with a layer of mulch of 7-10 cm is simply necessary. To do this, use wood shavings, sawdust, decomposed straw. Thus, moisture will remain in the soil, weeds will not be able to grow, in the event of the return of unexpected frosts, the soil will be insulated.
Green sprouts hatch usually 10 days after planting. In order for the root system to develop normally, it is necessary to monitor the soil moisture, it must be constantly moistened.
Culture aftercare
As soon as the first shoots appear, fertilize with nitrogen fertilizer. Use ammonium sulfate or urea solution (1 tbsp. l / bucket of water).
During the period of development of spring garlic, you need to feed at least two times. Perform the second procedure 14-20 days after the first. Mix nitrophoska or nitroammophoska with water (50 g / 10 l of liquid) and feed. During the formation of bulbs with cloves, in the last days of June, feed the plants with superphosphate (40 g of substance / 10 l of liquid). It is advisable to introduce a complex phosphorus-potassium composition during this period (2-3 tbsp. l. / 1 sq. m).
Garlic needs regular watering with cold water. It is necessary to carry out weeding, loosening the soil. Two weeks before harvest, watering is completely stopped.
Treat for diseases and pests as needed. You can plant marigolds or a few carrots next to the garden. Parasites do not tolerate the aroma of these plants.
Harvest as soon as the leaves turn yellow and dry. Dig up the bulbs, move them under a canopy, lay them out or hang them for storage.
