Landing time

• Gooseberries can be planted both in spring and autumn.
• Spring planting is good because the ground is filled with moisture and the young plant will not be able to dry out if the site is far away.
• However, it has a risk of freezing during return frosts if the time for planting is not chosen correctly.
• Choose the time according to the climatic conditions of your region. For the middle zone, this is the second decade of April, when the probability of return frosts is already small.
• Soil warming should be at least 10 ° C.
• It is better to plant on a cloudy, calm day.

Important! All planting work must be completed before the start of sap flow and swelling of the kidneys.

Seedling selection

• Gooseberries are green, black and yellow with different taste qualities.
• When purchasing a seedling, you need to decide exactly what kind of species you need.
• It is better to buy a seedling in green farms, so as not to be deceived.
• Seedlings must be bred for the area in which they will grow.
• If the roots are open, it is better to choose a two-year-old seedling. It is characterized by the presence of 2-3 healthy shoots up to 40 cm long and at least 1 cm thick in diameter.
• It is necessary to check if there are any damage or signs of disease on the shoots, and if the roots are too dry (try to break it slightly).

Seedling preparation

• We remove all broken branches from the plant and slightly trim the roots for better growth.
• A plant with an open root is placed in a root solution for 20-30 minutes.
• We water seedlings with an earthen clod to make it easier to pull out of the container.

Location selection

• The place should be sunny, but covered with a fence or wall from the winds.
• There should be no nearby groundwater, as plants do not like waterlogging.

• We make a tubercle on top so that moisture does not accumulate.
• Pour a bucket of water under each bush and mulch the trunk circle with hay, sawdust, compost or humus.

Care

Watering

• Water on average once a week until the seedling is fully adapted.

Important! Consider weather conditions so that there is no waterlogging.

pruning

• At the seedling, we cut off all the shoots, leaving 6-7 buds on each.
• Saplings with a weak root system are cut lower, leaving three or four buds so that the strength of the seedling is directed to the development of the root system.

top dressing

• With properly prepared soil, the plant will need only a small top dressing with nitrogen in early spring for 2-3 years.
• Fertilizers are applied annually to sandy soils.

Diseases

• Gooseberries with good care are not very susceptible to disease.
• The danger is powdery mildew, which has to be fought with the help of chemical poisons.
