Why do some drivers drill through a car muffler?

The muffler of a car is an extremely important and at the same time very vulnerable structural element of a vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Replacing a muffler is not an easy and expensive undertaking. Therefore, many motorists are looking for ways that could help them maximize the life of this part.

The practice of making a small hole in the muffler of a car appeared a long time ago. As is often the case, this "people's" council has both its supporters and its opponents. However, a large number of motorists have been drilling mufflers for decades in each of their vehicles. out of confidence that the implementation of this procedure will help to extend the maximum life of an expensive details. So what's the catch?

The fact is that condensate accumulates over time in a car muffler. The main reason for the formation of fluid is the temperature difference between the exhaust tract and the muffler itself. From the exhaust tract, hot gas enters the muffler at a temperature of 200 C. Part of the resulting liquid eventually boils out of the muffler and breaks through with the rest of the gases in the form of steam to the outside. However, there is always the possibility that some condensate will still flounder inside the part. Needless to say, water begins to affect the metal, and in winter it also freezes regularly.

In order to prevent water from accumulating in the muffler, motorists make a hole in it with a diameter of 2.5-3 mm. You can’t do less, because otherwise, due to capillary tension, water will not be able to leave the muffler through the hole. Drill a hole close to the edge, in a place where water can drain completely. The hole made allows you to extend the life of the muffler by reducing the risk of corrosion. However, this “fraud” also has negative consequences - there will be a little more noise from the operation of the car, including in the cabin. To drill or not to drill a muffler, each motorist decides at his own peril and risk.
