I love flowers more in a flower bed than in a vase, but it is not always possible to admire them in nature. A bouquet in the room creates a feeling of celebration, and you want the celebration to last longer. Cut flowers do not last as long as those grown in the soil. But there is an opportunity to extend the period of their existence.
Boiling water test
By lowering the end of the stem for some time in boiling water, you can extend the life of plants. The time the flowers can spend in boiling water depends on how tender they are. For example, a branch of lilac can be kept in boiling water for a minute, zinnia for half a minute, and a bell for only ten seconds.
I pour water into a mug and place the ends of the bouquet in it so that about 10% of the length of the stems is in the water. Do not keep the flowers in hot water for too long, otherwise you can burn them.
In this way, I was able to save even plants that were starting to dry out.
Bacteria
Most often, I pour tap water into a vase, which needs to be softened. By adding vinegar or citric acid to the water, I acidify and soften it. These elements also act on the development of bacteria, slowing it down. Reducing the number of bacteria allows the stems to free themselves from their blockage and receive moisture completely.
Keeping flowers fresh
To keep the bouquet in a vase for a long time, there are various additives:
- Vinegar and sugar keep fresh.
- So that the water does not spoil, I add an aspirin tablet or a spoonful of vodka to it.
- The addition of bleach will help keep the flowers looking healthy.
We connect flowers
Flowers with thin stems lack the strength to hold large heads, they need support. Small flowers can be tied together, and larger ones in pairs. Special vases will help the flowers not fall apart. These vases have supporting edges.

- special scissors with stronger and sharper blades;
- ties for tying flowers;
- vases with a wide neck;
- hair spray with a spray to strengthen the leaves of plants and maintain their shape.
Rest for flowers
After cutting fresh flowers, I give them time to rest. I put it in a bucket of water and leave it in a dark place for several hours or all night. Only after that I arrange in vases. Rested flowers in a bouquet live longer.
A color scheme
Not all flowers can live in the same vase. For example, lilies, along with tulips, quickly wither. Lilies of the valley and carnations should not be added to other flowers, they can only stand alone for a long time. Daffodils and hyacinths secrete a poisonous substance that is detrimental to other flowers. Roses, like true queens, oppress any flowers. When buying a bouquet, you should consult with a florist and get a hint about which flowers go well in a bouquet without oppressing each other. This bouquet will last a long time.
Secrets of some colors
There are flowers that are especially demanding on temperature, humidity, care for them:
- lilac quickly withers at high air temperatures;
- roses are especially demanding on moisture; at night it is recommended to place them in a bath with cool water;
- in lilies, I remove the dark tips of the stamens for their long preservation;
- chrysanthemums will stand in a vase for a month if you change the water and wash the vase daily;
- orchids do not like to be touched or sprayed with water;
- the proximity of fruits shortens the life of callas.
The least that can be done for the flowers in the bouquet is to change the water daily. And if you find a minute, you can extend the life of plants for a few more days.
