The development of silencers is quite common for gunsmiths. But usually we are talking about pistols, machine guns or rifles. However, this does not mean at all that there are no silencers for large guns. The largest such gadget was invented in Germany for a whole tank. Moreover, no one was going to use it during the battle, on the contrary, this silencer was created to maintain the peaceful, calm existence of German citizens.
You can see this miracle of weapons thought, made in a single copy, at the German training ground of the Technical Center for Weapons and Ammunition of the Bundeswehr, located in the city of Meppen. This is how some time ago a gadget was tested, which has already been called the largest silencer on the planet.
In fairness, it is worth clarifying that such a huge silencer was not the first in the history of German weapons. So, for example, similar equipment for the famous Leopard 2 armored vehicle. The layman does not know much information about this tank silencer, but their manufacturer, Rheinmetall, is known for certain. Another well-known development of a silencer for an armored vehicle was a project for the M60 tank, which was used at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in the middle of the last century.

The purpose of this gadget is also interesting. The thing is that howitzer silencers are not intended for use during hostilities, simply because there is no practical sense in this. But in peacetime they are just used: mainly it is needed in order to reduce the noise background of civilians, who live in close proximity to the training grounds, since tanks in tests and exercises really shoot very loudly.
Interesting fact: By the way, not so long ago there was information that they also tried to create a howitzer silencer for military operations. The corresponding project was discovered in the US Patent Office, but the development did not progress further than the drawings.
Therefore, there is nothing surprising in the fact that in Germany today the largest tank silencer on the planet is actively used. The thing is that there is a rather high population density and urbanization, and therefore it is simply impossible to place a test site at a distance from settlements. Perhaps there are other uses for this extraordinary gadget, the cost of which, according to Novate.ru, is about 100 thousand dollars, but they are still unknown to the townsfolk.
