Good day, dear readers! If you grow climbing roses on your plot, this article is for you. These delicate plants bloom very beautifully, however, in some cases, flowering may be scarce, or absent altogether.
Today I will talk about the main factors due to which there may be no flowering.
Unsuitable soil
Climbing roses are revealed in all their glory only on loose and fertile soils. If the roses do not bloom, it means that they do not have enough nutrition. This situation can be corrected by making competent dressings:
- In the first year of life, plants practically do not need additional nutrition. You can only feed the roses with organic matter. For these purposes, I use mullein, diluting it with water in a ratio of 1:10. For one bush, I spend up to three liters of solution.
- In the spring, after removing the winter shelter and pruning, you can feed the bushes with ammonium nitrate. For one square of landings, it takes me about 30 grams of funds. After a couple of weeks, I repeat this top dressing.
- At the budding stage, roses should be fed with complex compounds with a high nitrogen content.
- Even before the first flowering, climbing roses need organic matter. You can use both mullein and bird droppings.
- When the first flowering ends (usually this happens towards the end of July), I use complex mineral dressings. It is better to choose compositions in which there is no nitrogen.
- The final dressing should be carried out after the end of flowering. The purpose of such top dressing is the ripening of shoots. At this stage, I use superphosphate.
In the matter of top dressing, remember one important rule: you can not add too much nitrogen. Otherwise, the green mass will grow uncontrollably, and flowering will suffer.
Untimely removal of wild growth
Roses are prone to overgrowth. Under the shoots understand small branches with leaves and thorns. They form in the root zone. These shoots must be removed in time, otherwise the rose bushes will thicken and run wild. You need to cut the shoots directly at ground level.
Common Rose Diseases
The most dangerous diseases that harm rose bushes are powdery mildew and bark cancer.
In order not to deal with the consequences, timely prevention should be carried out. To do this, I spray the plants twice with a solution of Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 1%. It is worth performing the action even before the opening of the kidneys.
As an effective prevention of bark cancer, you can feed the plants with formulations high in potassium. Usually in September I apply superphosphate and potassium sulfate.
Plant immunity also depends on high-quality and timely winter shelter, which must be removed in time with the arrival of heat.
If your plants still have affected shoots, they should be urgently removed and burned outside the site.
Other mistakes in agricultural technology
Several more common factors can contribute to the lack of flowering:
- An unsuccessful landing site, which can not only lead to a lack of flowers, but also to the death of plants. For climbing roses, you should choose well-lit areas that are reliably protected from drafts and cold winds.
- Insufficient quality preparation for wintering. Climbing roses are important to cover not only from frost, but also from dampness. Between the bushes and the shelter, it is imperative to leave an air gap so that the plants can breathe. Preparation for winter must begin at the end of the summer season. By this time, it is worth stopping loosening and minimizing the frequency of watering, as well as stop applying nitrogen supplements.
- Pruning errors. Climbing varieties need the removal of old shoots and wild growth, and nothing more. Too much pruning will harm the plants.
If you avoid these common mistakes, climbing roses will bloom profusely.
