I think many were interested in the question of whether it is possible to avoid removing old tiles from the floor and walls in order to save time and effort during the renovation. Today I will tell you if the tile is suitable as a base for laying new tiles, or if it absolutely needs to be removed.
In what cases it is possible not to dismantle the old tile from the floor
There are certain moments when the dismantling of the old tile can be omitted. When renovating, people do not want to remove tiles from floors and walls for the following reasons:
- 1. They want to save time and effort spent on dismantling the tiles.
- 2. As a rule, when dismantling the tiles, some pieces of the screed simply break off. As a result, you need to either partially restore it or completely change it.
- 3. If the old tile is not dismantled, then after the repair there will be much less dirt and dust. Otherwise, cleaning will have to spend more time and effort.
- 4. By keeping the old tiles on the floor, you will not have to take out a lot of debris left after repair work.
- 5. Complete drying of a new screed is a rather lengthy process. When there is not enough time for repairs, you have to sacrifice something, leaving old tiles on the floor or walls.
As you can see, there are many good reasons for refusing to dismantle old tiles. You need to understand whether it is possible to lay tiles on the previous coating in your particular case. You need to approach business seriously and deliberately, otherwise the flooring will not last you long.
How to properly lay new tiles on old
The main difficulty that arises when carrying out these works is the natural force of attraction. Some time after laying, the tiles will begin to shrink. As a result, the old tile will have to withstand a certain load.
To prevent the coating from beginning to crumble, you should achieve high-quality and reliable adhesion between the old and new tiles. The seams must be cleaned in advance.
Important! It is advisable to remove the upper glazed layer of the old tile (at least partially), as well as buy a concrete contact. This composition must be applied to the surface using a spatula, and then properly leveled. Consumption of concrete contact, as a rule, is 250 grams per square meter.
If you are going to lay tiles not on the floor, but on the wall, keep in mind that the concrete contact must dry for at least 4 hours, and preferably all 6.
Further work on laying new tiles is carried out using the standard method. Since the tile adhesive dries quite quickly, you need to work in small areas of up to 1.5 square meters. You need to press the tile harder than usual. Please note that all flaws and irregularities should be removed before the adhesive completely hardens. A rubber mallet will help you with this.
To summarize: new tiles can be laid on old tiles. The main thing is to pay attention to the nuances and subtleties of the work. Follow all the tips above and the result will meet your expectations!
