How to restore worn-off bits to a screwdriver. Simple and fast. (+ Bonus

People who often work with a screwdriver know that bits that are cruciform will grind off with use. But it is very difficult to part with an old instrument, especially if it has served you faithfully for many years.

Today I decided to share a simple option for restoring damaged bits, which will give them a "second life". As a result, you will be able to work with them for more than a dozen hours.

Initially, I want to share with you a little trick with which you can increase the operating life of a bit by about 3 - 4 times.

Sometimes the metals used to make bits are of poor quality, unreliable and fragile. Even if you buy bits for a high price, this does not guarantee that they will last long.

How to increase the service life of a screwdriver bit

You need to clamp the bit in a vice and start heating with a burner. Only the upper part can be heat treated. If you do not have a vise at home, simply wrap the bat with strong steel wire.

Dip the hot bat into cold water. If desired, it is allowed to replace the fluid with machine oil. After a few seconds, the strength characteristics of the metal will increase significantly.

As a result, the bit will not grind longer

A quick way to recover bits

Having learned about this life hack, I began to save a lot on purchasing new beats. Its main advantage is that no special tools are needed. Just 1 minute - and the bit becomes usable again.

Recovery bit

We need to restore:

  • screwdriver,
  • metal file (fine-grained)

If you don't have a file at hand, you can use sandpaper.

If the bit has worn off too much, saw off the protrusion.

Sewing the sharp end

So, clamp the bit into a screwdriver. Place the tool on any flat surface, turn it on to the maximum. Place a towel or other suitable piece of cloth under the screwdriver.

Then turn the file slightly at an angle so that it sharpens the "petals" of the bit.

Do not let the end of the bit get too sharp. Try to make it blunt, otherwise grind off the sharp tip with a sharpening stone.
