Why raspberries get smaller berries, and what to do

I planted my remontant raspberry 10 years ago along the fence on the south side. The sun's rays and frequent rains did their good deed - at the end of August she gathered the first harvest from rare bushes. The largest number of fruits was obtained in the fourth year. I then distributed large and sweet berries to all my friends.

At this, the "golden" time of fruiting ended, the next year the harvest became much smaller, and the berries became small. I sinned for the weather, there were very few sunny days that season.

But after talking with experienced summer residents, I realized that it's not only the weather, but also my mistakes and shortcomings.

Merciless haircut

First of all, I thinned out the plantings, which became thicker every year. Before that, I was sorry to cut them out, I thought that the more bushes there are, the more harvest. But she was wrong.

The root system of shrubs over time covered the entire surface of the earth. Young shoots grew and filled the entire space, and I removed only old and broken branches.

Following the advice, I left the distance between the bushes 70 cm, and on each bush there were 6 - 7 strongest shoots, the rest were cut to the very root. Malinnik began to "breathe"being blown through and getting enough light.

For sweetness and taste

I didn't often spoil the raspberry with watering, I thought that there was enough rain. But shrubs, like all plants, love to eat and drink. They do not have enough precipitation, so in a dry summer, I watered the raspberry tree directly from the hose every three days.

In the spring, before the buds bloom, she sprayed the shoots with Bordeaux liquid from inevitable pests and introduced nitrophosphate. And before fruiting, she "fed" the plants with superphosphate.

If it was possible to get manure, then she was sure to "treat" them with this organic matter rich in useful elements.

The combination of moisture and soil nutrition created a favorable environment for the production of large and aromatic berries.

Mulch for moisture retention

The area set aside for the raspberry tree is located on a hill, so the moisture does not linger for a long time. To maintain optimal moisture for growth and fruiting, I began to use mulch. I use dry cut grass and straw.

Raspberries "rejoice" in nettle mulch - I specially follow it to the nearest ravine, grind it and put it under each bush. It protects the roots from heat and is an excellent fertilizer.

Another important point!

Along each row of bushes, I pull the wire on both sides. Branches from such protection do not break from the wind, do not tilt to the ground under the weight of berries, - they are convenient to process and harvest.

Pruning bushes, timely feeding, watering and mulching were not in vain. For several years now, raspberries have been delighting with large berries of amazing taste. Now I do not allow the culture to grow as it pleases, but I observe the correct agricultural techniques. From August to the end of October, I collect delicious and healthy berries on my site!
