Growing a crop on your site is not easy. Moreover, having spent so much effort, I want to keep it safe and sound until the next collection. This is especially true for carrots, which are most difficult to protect from flabbiness and germination.
Rule # 1
In order to keep the carrots intact throughout the long winter, it is extremely important remove it from the ridge correctly and in time. It is best to do this in mid-September: by this time it has probably already matured, but has not yet managed to outgrow, fully retaining all its useful properties.
After carefully digging up the root vegetables, I carefully sort them into three heaps.
1. In the first place, I put carrots large and completely intact - without cracks and damage. It is she who is subject to long storage.
2. In the second pile I put small fruits.
3. In the third - a perfect "illiquid": twisted and badly damaged carrots.
Important! Never dry your carrots in the sun. It will lose moisture and quickly begin to flabber!
Rule # 2
I keep our favorite family vegetable in three places: in the cellar, in the freezer and in the "hole".
1. For the cellar take half of the first sorted heap. Pre-cut the tops together with the "cap" - one and a half centimeters, or even two: this will certainly prevent the re-germination of the tops.
I put dry carrots in bags of sugar or flour, sprinkling them with wood ash (you can use sand). In order for the fruits not to rot, there should be no dampness in the cellar (or underground).
Another proven way is wooden boxes with dry shavings. Carrots are also stored in them for a long time: they do not flabby, do not rot and do not germinate.
2. For freezer take the second pile. Carefully wash the carrots, rub them on a coarse grater and pack them in bags. So, firstly, it will never germinate, and secondly, it will significantly speed up the preparation of the first and second courses!
3. My favorite way, inherited from an economic granny. On a site - rural or suburban, you need to dig a hole one and a half meters deep. I put spruce legs at the bottom: this will save the harvest from rodents and, at the same time, will maintain the desired temperature regime. I fall asleep in the hole the second part of the first heap (cut also "mercilessly"), shifting the layers of carrots with the same spruce branches. I cover the last layer of branches with acrylic and cover it with earth.
In the spring, as soon as the snow melts, I dig a hole and the whole family enjoys absolutely fresh, juicy vegetables, as if they had just been dug out of the garden!
A request to those who are not a burden, please put like (thumbs up) and subscribe to my channel. I invite you with all my heart - I am glad to see you! :) And also I look forward to seeing you on my new and interesting website"4 SEASONS OF THE GARDENER".
