Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of the "Build for myself" channel!

Walking through the Museum of Wooden Architecture in Veliky Novgorod, I was surprised when I saw on wooden buildings of the XVI century, wooden tiles, preserved almost in the original up to the present day, and this is on wait a minute 300-400 years have passed.

As the overseer of the museum explains, in some places the roof starts to leak, but not critical. 80% of the roof is rafter systems and finishing flooring that have been preserved since that time. An employee says that craftsmen are quick to restore individual sites and replace shards.

The following photo shows how the roofing of old houses will look. As you can see, individual shards are laid with a herringbone, each row of which is multidirectional. This ensures the tightness of the roof covering with a rather unstable material. Unstable, because wood is a natural material that expands and contracts depending on weather conditions.

The following illustration is a side view of the roof, from the side of the pediment. We see that each piece element is narrow and long, extending 50-60 cm under the overlying rows. and each sheet is placed on two transversely lying logs.

There is no doubt that the material is many years old. And, in fact, wooden roofs have a long history. There is still a bell tower in Finland since 1836. and the roof is made of wood.

Why am I saying all this?

I confess that I first saw such a roof on a modern residential building 4 years ago and have never seen such a roof in modern construction, only on saunas and gazebos. This house:

A very beautiful house with a huge investment.

But now, more and more often I hear from people about this roof, who are already trying to consider a wooden version for their roof.

History repeats itself?

We are again returning to old methods and materials. And in fact, wood has excellent characteristics in terms of heat and sound insulation, light weight, very beautiful appearance and, as you can see, a long service life.

Of course, there are also disadvantages, because this is a natural material: adherence to the chimney must be done with fire-fighting materials, in addition, every element must be processed from bugs and various insects.

Nowadays, wood shingles are called shingles (in Europe) or shingles (in Russia). These are individual planks, which are obtained from splitting logs along the fibers.

Piece elements for a wooden roof can be made by hand:

And also the installation of the roof itself can be done by one person:

Wood species suitable for such roofs:

  • cedar;
  • larch;
  • spruce;
  • oak;
  • aspen.

I understand that it is extremely rare to find such a roof made of wood on our new houses, because today it is the main reason for buying material, this is the practicality of the material and ease of installation, and very few are ready to give money for the environmental friendliness of materials and unsurpassed beauty.
