Should I use a voltage regulator and a voltage monitoring relay together?

Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of the "Build for Myself" channel!

Perhaps many will say that it is pointless to use two protection devices, but nevertheless I installed both in my house: an input voltage stabilizer and an RKN (voltage control relay). In this article I will explain the purpose of each device and the fundamental difference between these products. And also, the need to use both devices together.

Stabilizer

It is used to maintain the performance of electrical equipment by smoothing fluctuations and voltage surges. Equalizes the voltage value for power supply of household appliances ~ 220V. But, such devices work in certain intervals of the input voltage, therefore they turn off and de-energize the house if the voltage goes beyond the limits, usually 160 V - 280 V.

Relay

The relay, in turn, does not stabilize the voltage, but only controls it within the specified limits. If there are constant surges, then the relay will be constantly disconnected, thereby the house will be de-energized, depending on the frequency of voltage surges.

Advantages and disadvantages

Dimensions

The gimbals are bulky and bulky, so I had to hang it flush with the top drawers. In the future, it will be covered with a facade providing ventilation.

The control relay is much smaller and is installed together with all circuit breakers (automatic devices) and differential automatic devices on a DIN rail of a common electrical panel.

The cost

A 5 kW stabilizer came out to me several times more expensive (8,000 rubles) than a voltage control relay (1,700 rubles), if we take models for 7, 8 or 10 kW, then the price starts from 9,000 rubles.

Exploitation

Smoothing jumps during operation, the stabilizer heats up due to coils, for which in some of a forced cooling system is built into them, therefore there is extraneous noise in the room. In addition, operating requirements are imposed on it, namely, it is allowed to use them only in dry and clean rooms. ILV is not so demanding to external conditions and is completely silent.

Device functionality

If the stabilizer serves to maintain the voltage at the same level, then the RKN is an automatic device specially designed to disconnect the load (open the network) in the moment of a sharp jump or voltage drop, so it reacts much faster to such a phenomenon and, accordingly, copes with this task better than a stabilizer.

More than once I heard from friends about the inexpediency of using a relay, and they motivate this by the fact that the stabilizer performs the same functions as the monitoring relay, disconnecting the load when the voltage exceeds the set work intervals.

But, I think that it is not so. After all, the main functions of the devices are different.
At the voltage regulator - stabilize the voltage, at the voltage monitoring relay - control the voltage!

There is no universal device that would smooth out surges and could protect electrical appliances from a sudden power surge. And, the best solution would be to use both a stabilizer and a voltage control relay together.

As a result, we will get maximum protection for our household appliances.

In addition, by setting the relay voltage to the stabilizer, it will provide protection for the stabilizer itself, for example, in the event of a zero break, and as a result, a jump in the input voltage two times higher than the norm.

That's all, thank you for your attention and I hope you enjoyed the article.
