"Why do you need expensive plaster, take a better plaster?"

  • Dec 11, 2020

Good afternoon, dear guests and subscribers of my channel!

This topic would not be of any value if ordinary stucco and finished gypsum plaster were equal in price. But, the difference is significant: if a bag of gypsum costs 100-120 rubles, then a ready-made plaster mixture based on gypsum already starts from 200 rubles, i.e. at least twice as expensive for the same volume!

Well, okay, 80-100 rubles on one bag does not matter, but if you plaster the whole house, then at least 150-200 bags are required, and this is a difference on average of 14,000 - 18,000 rubles.

When I started to choose a material for plastering my house, I consulted with many craftsmen. I was offered, among other things, machine application, but I stopped at hand-mixed plaster, when Artush (Armenian) spread it out on his fingers and explained that gypsum comes out much cheaper than any of the ones on the market ready mixes:

Why do you need expensive plaster, says Artush, take gypsum?
- I don't consider gypsum at all. Whatever I do with him, he still quickly freezes and I do not have time to develop a large volume.

Wait, he says, you need to work properly with the plaster.

Then the Armenian explained to me about the recipe for his plaster, and then told me about many more options that make it easier to work with gypsum.

And the most important rule is to use a clean container and a clean instrument, as well as first pour water and only then add gypsum, and not vice versa!

Recipe for Armenian plaster from Artush :-)))

Mixed into dry seeded sawdust and gypsum in a ratio of 1: 3 (sawdust: gypsum). Further, water is poured and ordinary cheap milk is added 3.2% in a ratio of 10: 1 (water: milk). After that, gypsum with sawdust is added to this water and thoroughly mixed until a creamy state. Everything.

So, the first gypsum hardening retarder is milk. The quantity is always selected experimentally, it all depends on the quality of the plaster and the pace of the master's work. The standard ratio is 10: 1, but it is floating. In this case, the plaster begins to set in 25-30 minutes.

Retarders:

1. Citric / boric / tartaric acid. They allow to slow down the hardening time of gypsum up to 90 minutes. 1-3 g are added. per liter of water.

2. Table vinegar. 4 tbsp. spoons per 1 liter. water. The pot life of the gypsum is 45-60 minutes.

3. Simple cheap gypsum plaster. It is added by volume 1: 1, then the hardening time of the mixture will be 40 minutes, at 2: 1 - 30 minutes, 3: 1 - 20 minutes.

4. Lime. Slaked lime, when added from 5 to 20% by weight of gypsum, increases the pot life of the mixture from 15 to 25 minutes. In addition, lime is an excellent plasticizer.

5. Slows down hardening time and normal superplasticizer for concrete. The proportion is the same for both cement and plaster. Cm. on the package.

6. PVA glue. Proportion 1: 4 by volume to water. Pot life 20-25 min.

In addition to everything, you can add ordinary fine-grained sand in a volumetric proportion: 0.5 tsp. by 1 h. gypsum.

The advantages of gypsum over ready-made mixtures:

Due to self-adjustment of the setting time, beacons are easily and quickly placed with plaster or drywall is glued. In addition, if the plaster, which hardens within one and a half to two hours, needs to be applied in a thick layer, then under its own weight it settles and a wave can form in the lower part of the wall even when the master has already made the final cut.
