Place and time of boarding

It is most convenient to plant garlic in the fall, then the harvest is larger and the heads are not as small as is the case with spring sowing.

Depending on the planting period, the depth of burying the cloves is selected. Ideal is considered 3-5 cm deep into the soil. It is advisable to carry out this type of work approximately 2-3 weeks before the start of negative air temperatures. In time, this period falls on the end of September and the beginning of October. In the southern regions, garlic is usually planted in November.

If weather forecasters predict severe frosts, planting is done at a depth of 10-15 cm. In this case, the survival rate of the planted material will increase significantly.

It is important to choose the right seed. Only winter garlic is planted in autumn, and only spring garlic in spring. Distinguishing one type of sowing garlic from another is not so difficult. Winter garlic:

  • from 4 to 12 slices;
  • the lobules have a pinkish-violet shell;
  • are arranged in one row, surrounding a solid rod;
  • burning taste;
  • the shelf life is shorter.
The landing site must be chosen with great care. It is preferable to plant this plant on those beds where tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, beans, beans grew before. The fertilizers that were applied for these crops can be used for the growth of garlic.

It is not recommended to place plantings in places where potatoes and onions grew before. There is a high probability of transmission of pests that infect these plants to garlic sprouts.

Soil preparation and planting

In the places where the garden will be located, there should be no manure, which will inevitably provoke active growth of the tops. The soil should be of normal or low acidity. The sunny side of the site is necessarily chosen. The soil for planting is prepared in advance. At the end of summer, the following is introduced into the soil at the site of the future bed:

  • 10 kg of humus;
  • 2 glasses of ash and 1 glass of chalk;
  • 2 tbsp. l. potassium sulfate and 1 tbsp. l. superphosphate.
Planting width - 1 m. The soil is dug at the site of the future bed. Then the soil should shrink. The earth is watered with a solution of copper sulfate for pest control. Only after that do we plant the garlic.

Garlic selected for planting must be carefully examined and divided into separate cloves. Only large teeth are suitable for planting. The slices used must be disinfected. To do this, they are soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Planting is carried out in holes on a bed specially prepared for this purpose. The distance between the holes is 10 cm. Depth - up to 15 cm. The two rows are spaced 25 cm apart. Each clove gently sinks into the soil, but does not press in, otherwise the process of root formation will be disrupted. Then everything is covered with earth, but it is better if it is rotted humus. If the soil is dry, watering with a small amount of a weak solution of potassium permanganate is allowed.

There is a less common method of growing winter garlic. In this case, soil preparation is carried out in the traditional way. Only all fertilizers are simply scattered over the soil surface.

Further, the land is cultivated. For speedy shrinkage, the soil is watered abundantly. Then peas, oats or white mustard are planted along the prepared bed. The day before planting the main crop, the next top dressing is carried out, namely, urea is scattered and the soil is abundantly watered.

Any of the methods allows you to ensure a good harvest of this bulbous culture, but only if the order of work is followed. A thick layer of snow, which protects the soil from freezing, contributes a lot to good productivity. The crop can be harvested next summer.
