- Development of diseases. Often the onion is affected by rust, while the feathers turn yellow, then turn black. The cause of the disease is fungus. Leaves are also affected by bacterial rot. What measures are being taken?
In order not to wait for mercy from nature, you should build a greenhouse in the spring. This will help protect green feathers from intense exposure to sunlight, heavy and frequent summer rains. In this case, you can independently adjust the watering frequency.
If yellowing of the leaves is noted due to a lack of nutrients in the soil, plant feeding will help. Fertilizers are introduced to provide the crop with sufficient nutrients. A mixture is prepared: 10 l of water, 20 g of superphosphate, 50-70 g of ammonium nitrate, 20 g of potassium salt. It is introduced into the soil when the green feathers reach 3 cm in height, the second time after 1 week.
Having figured out why the onion turns yellow in the garden and what needs to be done, they consider the following possibilities:
- to protect against rot, even at the planting stage, a suitable place for the garden is chosen: on an elevation, which will avoid flooding the site;
- crop rotation is observed;
- the planting material is carefully selected, heated (at a temperature not exceeding + 40 ° C), the duration of the procedure is at least 12 hours;
- use varieties resistant to the development of diseases and pests;
- before planting, the neck is cut off by 1 cm, which will allow detecting hidden pathological processes in the structure of the bulb;
- dig up the soil before frosts and at the beginning of spring;
- the planting material is processed: it is kept in a hot liquid (temperature + 45 ° C) for 10 minutes, then immersed in a cold one.
To destroy pests, insecticidal preparations are used. For example, a common scheme is based on the use of the "Confidor" agent: 10 liters of water, 1 ml of the substance. Alternative: use the drug "Iskra", in this case take 1 tablet, dissolve in water (10 l).
