How to feed raspberries after harvesting and pruning

  • Dec 13, 2020

During the period of intensive fruiting and development of shoots, raspberries consume a lot of nutrients. As a result, the soil is severely depleted and requires additional fertilizing. To find the right composition, you should clarify how to feed the raspberries.

Fertilizer selection

Before using fertilizers, a thorough preparation of the site should be carried out with the removal of weeds and digging the soil to a depth of 15-20 cm in the aisles and 8-10 cm in the rows. You also need to get rid of damaged, diseased or old and unproductive branches that drain the land. Then you can move on to feeding. This is done between late summer and mid September. At the same time, remontant varieties are fed later, due to the time of their fruiting.

Many gardeners and summer residents use organic matter and mineral complexes for raspberries. In autumn, you can use the following substances:

  • Compost.
  • Manure.
  • Chicken droppings.
  • Wood ash.
  • Sideratami.
  • Peat.

After 3-4 years, when digging, add compost or rotted manure in the amount of 4-5 kg of substance per 1 m² of the plot. Such treatment not only improves the fertility of the substrate, but also protects the roots of berry bushes from low temperatures.

When using chicken manure, it is important to be very careful not to deviate from the acceptable dosage. It is better to apply fertilizing in liquid form, diluting it with water in a ratio of 1:20.

Ash is applied after harvest, when the crop is deficient in potassium and the gardener needs to normalize the acidity of the soil. About 100 g of the mixture is scattered near the trunk circle of each bush.

If siderates (clover, mustard, vetch) are grown near the plant, they can be mowed after harvest and buried in the ground. By spring, the greens will rot and become a natural source of nutrients.

Mineral dressing

Autumn processing of raspberries implies the introduction of mineral complexes into the soil, which are enriched with important trace elements. Among them:

  • Phosphorus.
  • Potassium.

It is better to refuse an increased concentration of nitrogen, since this component poses a danger to the culture and can cause its death due to the increased collection of green mass. Stimulating the development of new shoots will prevent raspberries from going dormant, so they will be damaged by frost.

Superphosphate can be a source of phosphorus, about 60 g is used for each bush. The granules are immersed in carefully loosened soil and buried 7-10 cm.

With the help of potassium, it is possible to improve the resistance of the culture to low temperatures. Potassium sulfate (40 g) is added together with phosphorus.

Kalimagnesia is a good remedy for autumn feeding. The composition is consumed in the amount of 25-30 g per bush. If young plants are fertilized, the concentration is reduced by 2 times.

Experienced sensors advise placing fertilizers in pits about 20 cm deep in the ground. In this case, the soil will quickly become saturated with deficient substances.

Chloride dressings, including potassium salt, are not used in autumn. This is because they can cause the development of chlorosis.

If you are going to plant raspberry seedlings in the fall, not in the spring, be sure to feed the shrub with mineral and organic preparations.

To stimulate growth and development, rotted manure in the amount of 10 kg and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers (20 g) are applied per 1 m². Preparations are scattered around the perimeter of the site and sprinkled with organic matter. The substrate is carefully dug up, then trenches for seedlings are arranged in it.

In addition to feeding raspberries on time, it is important to take care of regular watering. In the fall, you need to water the shrub only once, around mid-September. Liquid consumption per 1 sq. m is 50-60 liters. This will ensure a bountiful harvest next year.
